I have received more than I have had registered. [...] So, I think I should address the balance. I registered years ago, sent one whole postcard and realized it is not my cup of tea, both because I prefer letters and because I do not love postcards enough - well, at least I do not love *most postcards* enough - and because for me it was weird sending to person A and receiving from person B. For reasons unknown to me, I received two postcards (both of them quite plain...), I felt in debt towards the world until I found Sendsomething and started sending random mail. I liked it better because there one can choose the country where to send and there is a fair possibility to get a feedback and build a friendship. To tell the truth, I am not so enthusiastic about Sendsomething as I used to be but that is another story.

I've just re-registered Life has been a case of scrimping and cutbacks this past year with Neil being out of work but now that he's back in a job I can start to enjoy keeping the postie busy once more I used to really enjoy postcrossing as I'm fortunate to live in a very touristy part of the world and quite a few shops in the centre of town do postcards and the Tourist Information Centre has some really gorgeous ones. I like to send ones of Northumberland views (tho' I'll pick up random subjects like animals, cartoons etc from Ebay or Amazon or elsewhere so I have a good selection in stock) and decorate the back as well as, especially in the case of views of our numerous castles up here, I'll write a bit of history or other interesting facts about them Writing a letter takes me, on average, about two/three hours so I tend to only do one a day if I have time but postcards are quick and fun and a nice relaxing 'de-stress the brain' way of satisfying my mail fix. Sending my first five out today

After hearing so much about this for so many months, I thought, maybe I should at least give this a try. So I signed up and decided to start with 2 since I happen to have 2 postcards left over from our impromptu camping/off-roading to the sand dunes last weekend.
In concept it sounds really cool. But we'll see if it seems worth it in reality. I can squeeze a lot into a postcard in my tiny writing to make it seem "worth sending" postage-wise for me. But I'm just not sure what to expect coming back my way. But it could be interesting. We will see! My first two will go out tomorrow.

If you select the option to send within your own country, that might help. If you have postcards travelling to Russia, you will need patience as post can take its time to get there (someone mentioned it seems slower than usual). Someone here mentioned elsewhere about sending a Postcrossing postcard to her penpal!

Someone here mentioned elsewhere about sending a Postcrossing postcard to her penpal! How fun would that be! And I'm glad you mentioned about Russia, as my second card is headed there. Maybe I'll have to dig through my stationary and see if I have any other interesting postcards. And I just went and checked the box for sending within my own country, too, so thanks for the tip on that as well. Looking forward to seeing how this goes.

Someone here mentioned elsewhere about sending a Postcrossing postcard to her penpal! It was me!!! I was lucky enough to send an official card to my Penpal:
www.postcrossing.com/postcards/US-4789446
I sent it a week after I got home from visiting her in Belgium. How cool is that??

How cool, Erin! I wonder if I'll "run into" anyone I know on there. Time will tell, I guess.
I decided that if I was going to do a proper test of this, I should probably send out all 5 post cards, and I think that if I get at least 3 back that make me smile and feel happy, then I will continue. So I dug out 3 more postcards from my stationary stash and had a good ol' time matching them up to the people who would enjoy them most. It was surprisingly fun writing short little messages (still 10-20 sentences in my tiny writing, but just a quick 10 minute endeavor I could do on my breaks). I even sent a recipe on one to a lady in Luxembourg who liked recipes (an apple post card to go with the apple crisp recipe!). This is fun!
I'm thinking of getting my sister in on this, too. She loves letters and mail, but with two very little ones at home she doesn't have time to sit down and write an actual letter. This might be perfect for her. Especially since she doesn't have to request an address until she actually has the time to sit down and write.

Quick question though. I think someone on the forum (maybe Erin?) recently mentioned sending 100 postcards a month. I assumed this was mostly through postcrossing. But maybe not, if you're only allowed to have 5 in transit at a time. Or is that just for beginners? Are you allowed more as you participate more? Or does the mystery forum member in question just happen to have lots of correspondence that can be done via post card? I guess I could just wait and see how it works, but curiosity killed the Katie, and all that... I figured someone on here definitely knows the answer.

When you have a certain amount of sent cards registered, the number you can send/have travelling increases. My allowance is 60! From their FAQalthough these limits have changed since I started Postcrossing. I think I had to wait until 20 sent postcards registered to be able to send a 6th.

Oh cool, I totally missed the FAQ section. I've learned all sorts of interesting things while checking that out. Thanks!

Well funnily enough I just received a postcard from Australia this morning and when I read the name on the back of the card I thought ''Ooooh I know you!'' It was from a lady who also takes part in February's Month Of Letters and we've exchanged postcards & short letters in the past. What a small world, eh?

How did you realize this? It sounds very mysterious. Do we get to know who the parties involved are? I love this kind of thing, it's so fun to see how small the world is.

I was just looking at a postcrossing profile. Some people use the same (or similar) usernames on various sites and I took a gamble. Then, I looked at the sent/received lists and spotted a very familiar name!
