I wouldn't think it's necessarily people having romance in mind when they ask for a photo. Some people just like to have an idea of what their 'counterpart' looks like. Personally, I couldn't care less, but different strokes for different folks, I think. I don't ask people for photos, but I understand when someone asks. Depending on where we stand with our communication, I either comply - or ignore the question I'm sure you're right
And hey, michelleg, I'm now having a meaningful conversation with a person from Penpal World! But we are forced to use e-mail, since she lives in a country where post is not delivered at the moment. So not very good for my goal to spend less time online and more with a pen in my hand..

I have tried Slowly, but it reminds me of Interpals. Some of the letters seem to want more. Oh yes, that happens.. In fact when i was going through the reviews last year (while updating the app) I did see a lot of "I found the love of my life" type reviews. In the beginning, mostly men wrote to me with the intention of starting a "more-than-penpal relationship" -- which is weird since I had already mentioned I am married. Probably nobody reads the bio. I HAD to ultimately change my gender preference to "only female and other". Many profiles add "Not looking for a romantic relationship" in their profile. Dont know how that works for them.

I had not heard of this app before. Sounds interesting. Is there a way to use it with a computer, or can you only use it with smartphone? I hate writing longer messages with my phone..
After the latest update, YES! we can type the mails using the computer @radellaf I agree, typing really long mail on the phone can be a headache.I still type on the phone though.

I'm guessing that if things persisted long enough, photos might naturally enter the conversation but if a person is writing just for the joy of writing and getting to know a person, photos seem pretty far down the list. Exactly. I am curious about how somebody looks and imagine the other person. When I send mail I usually dont ask for pictures, under the assumption that they will send it when they are comfortable. I usually send pictures of my travels or plants or whatever Im talking about. Gradually (pop!) either of our faces will be there in some pic..maybe a christmas party or something. I think, most women (?) are a bit wary about sending pictures till we know somebody well enough. Strange times, we cant be sure who exactly is on the receiving end.

I have found most of my pen friends on Interpals. I have also found pen pals on Facebook pen palling groups, and one potential friend on Global Pen Friends. Finally (phew!), I have connected to new pen friends on Instagram through the Pen Pals Over 30 group. I am also debating as to whether or not potentially support "International Pen Friends" I joined back in 1992, and would do so again to meet new friends, and for nostalgic reasons. Was anyone here a member of IPF? I wrote to them recently, with the hopes of them having my original pen friend list, alas, they do not keep records going that far back

I was part of International Pen Friends back in about 1985. I've unfortunately lost touch with all of the pen friends I got from them, except one.

My cat, the Horse, managed to take down my keyboard and the most vexing thing is she permanently destroyed the capital "i".
if you like fountain pens, a group of people on facebook called "Fountain Pen Friends" has some very good people. it tends to skew male, but not entirely.
And if you are willing to pay a small fee there's a group called LEP: League of Extraordinary Penpals. it's not a bad group in that you get to read the person's interests in a data base first. People of all ages and from many places. it tends to skew female, but not entirely. it's organized with some care, although your results may vary. i would say the "typical" member is a woman born between 1970-1985 who crafts her own cards and meditates. it's a nice group.
i like this place for the 5Q's a lot. i never send them expecting a return. i feel that it's an instant "date" with no dreadful consequences and no expectations of a return.

No, I haven't ever paid for their service. As @dignum suggested, you can send a smile (that's always free, as far as I know), and with some luck, the person will get back to you. The restriction of some profiles for free members really is annoying, isn't it?

Yeah, well, they don't really advertise this, do they! You learn the hard way *lol* They do have some funny rules, I think - like they will not reveal how they decide to give out free credits (they say they do it at random - wtf?) and all that. Overall, it's a pretty good platform, though. Good luck and let us know if it works out for you!

Maybe that's why some people I've sent smiles to or sent smiles to me haven't responded on there? I did the pay by month, so it's cheaper and I could decide if I wanted to renew....I found my one Korean pen pal on there and we pretty quickly switched to personal emails. Since then, we've emailed each other almost every day. It's hit or miss...but look to see if there's a month to month option for CA.

I won't be needing a membership after all! I smiled and received a response! I will be writing my new pen pal an introductory snail mail letter next week Yay! Thank you for the 'smile' advice... I wouldn't have thought of doing that.

This is a lovely pen pal matching service - The Victorian Letter Writers Guild - matches are only open to ladies and are seasonal exchanges. The Autumn matches have recently been sent out so the next exchange will be Winter. linkI rec'd mine! Writing to her sometime this week. First time trying it.
