I'm new to this fountain pen business, but would love to try some new inks. I've bought a bunch of samples in the basic colors and even bought the Sailor Yama-Dori at someone's suggestion on the board. (Great advice...I LOVE the color). But I would love to know everyone's favorite ink before I buy the next round of samples. So far I've committed to 4 full size bottles. (Thanks to distractedmom and kalliope for the ideas thus far!)

Oooh, one of my favourite topics! Yama-Dori is indeed stunning! Robert Oster has some gorgeous inks, too. I rather like Fire & Ice and Spearmint. Can't go wrong with Pilot Iroshizuku inks either. I particularly like ku-jaku but tsuki-yo and syo-ro are nice, too. Problaly hard to get as it's a LE but Lamy Dark Lilac is stunning, especially on Tomoe River paper (two words: gold sheen). Another LE but should still be readily available, Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz is a lovely brown ink. I'm sure you'll get plenty more suggestions, which I might just note down myself.

Probably hard to get as it's a LE ... What does "LE" mean?

I've found the Smoky Quartz but no luck with the LE Dark Lilac.

I have a few, but hate the idea of LE ink. If I end up loving the color, I want it a regular item forever. Sailor has disappointed in that respect by discontinuing a few colors, but their ink has enough redeeming qualities I'll forgive that (once).
If you get expensive ink, and budget is an issue, look for a deal. PenChalet has good discounts on most, eBay on others.
I'm a big advocate of Diamine. They have colors to match just about all the more expensive ones and 80-90% are, IMHO, just as well behaved. The 30mL bottles ordered direct from the Diamine UK site are quite reasonably priced even with shipping so long as you max out the 10 euro level (5 bottles? or 6 and delete the sample), or get enough (9?) to spread out the 15 euro shipping. You can try 5-6 colors for the price of one MSRP Edelstein, Caran d'Ache, or Faber Castell.
More controversially, I love Noodler's _regular_ colors. The non-permanent, non-experimental, bright, beautiful colors like Apache Sunset or Ottoman Azure. Harder to get outside the USA, but about $12.50 a 90mL bottle here, and I like them better 1:4 or 1:3 diluted so really more like 120mL.
Hard to tell you particular colors since that's such a personal choice. Anderson Pens and Goulet have ink swab comparators, and there are ink reviews on forums, blogs, and youtube if a color strikes you but you want to see what others think of it.

I am still hoping that Lamy will add Dark Lilac to their standard line.

Cross Violet is very close in color to Lamy Dark Lilac, and is available at a reasonable price, not ridiculous FOMO Ebay markup prices.
My favorite colors tend to be blue, and Bung Box Sapphire is one of my top inks, but I can go down a list of colors to try out.
Blue: Bung Box Sapphire, Akkerman #5 Shocking Blue Green: KWZ Green #2, Montblanc Irish Green (these two are very similar in color) Purple: Lamy Dark Lilac, Diamine Bilberry Brown: Montblanc Toffee Brown, Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz Orange: Sailor Apricot, Bung Box Tangerine/Fresh Oranges

I don't remember how many of you mentioned Pilot Iroshizuku inks, but I love them. They are pricey, but oh so juicy.
