I use fountain pens so I am limited to 'only' about 500-600 available colors. (No kidding.) I used to choose colors depending upon the seasons: grass green and turquoise in spring, purples and reds in summer, copper and browns in autumn, dark blues and grays/blacks in winter. But over the past six months only three inks have been in rotation. Waterman's serenity blue (dark), Sheaffer blue (light and old fashioned) and De Atramentis document brown (medium). What colors do you typically use?

I'm an ink fan and I like to vary colors. I carry a pen wallet with 12 different pens and inks. When I start repeating those colors in correspondence or want something fresh, I add a new ink or two.
Right now it's loaded with: N Habanero Ancient Copper PKBs Candela Green (an olive green mix) N Black DA Elderberries PR Naples Blue MB Toffee Brown JH Emerald of Chivor N Cactus Fruit Eel Queen Calle (darker dusty reserved purple I mixed for my boss) S Souten DA Thomas Alva Edison 15% & William Shakespeare 85%

I don't have a good discerning eye for the subtleties of different shades (well they're subtle to me; I remain skeptical when people exclaim "what do you mean they look the same, they're completely different!!!"). This is aggravated by difficulty remembering which ink is which once it's on the page.
So with about 30 different inks in play, I've reached the point where I don't buy more ink until I've finished one of the bottles I've already got, and have thus achieved some sort of stasis.
At work I use different colours for different functions, so always have separate pens inked with a green, a red, and a blue; sometimes I'll have some shade of brown. Outside of work, it's whatever happens to strike my fancy, but it seems I always have a pen loaded with ancient copper.

I'm very much a fan of earthy colours so I use a lot of reddy brown's like Ancient copper, autumn oak, toffee brown and lie de the. I do have a lot of inks to choose from, and have made a resolution this year to use more of them. I have one pen pal in particular who is an ink monster so every time she writes to me I end up adding a new ink to the "must have" list!

I'm all over the place with my colors. I lean towards blue-blacks, browns or dark reds.

I like all sorts of ink except for extremely bright colours like yellow or some flashy pink. Also blue-blacks are not my first choice, but not unpleasant to read or anything.
My current favourites include J Herbin Larmes de Cassis, J Herbin Vert Empire and Diamine Chocolate Brown.

I used to be just a black ink user in adulthood (as a teenager, I liked using brown, green, and purple universal cartridges in my fashion cartridge pens), but the discovery of a nice little ink company selling reasonably priced bottles means letters can be a bit colourful. Any colour, depending on which pen I grab and has ink in!

I love reading threads like this, just because it is so interesting to hear what everyone's personal preferences are! I usually carry 9 pens, though I've tried to keep it down to 6 lately. I'll probably go back up to 9 when I get my new shipment with some new pens and inks this week. Personally, I think variety is the spice of life, so I like to have one each of: red, green, blue, purple then, depending on my mood, I fill up the extra slots with: another blue (dark or light, whatever the original blue WAS NOT) pink orange novelty ink - this is something that is a bit out of my comfort zone, like a murky green-brown, or a novelty ink (something shimmery), or something that I've mixed myself.

I love colour and I use all and every shade imaginable EXCEPT Diamine Golden Brown. That ink is a horror.
Current pens are inked with Kobe Renoir Pink, R & K Cassis, Sailor Yama-dori, Kyo-no-oto #1 Nureba-ne-iro (black), Herbin Éclat de Saphir, Mb Daniel Defoe, Noodler's Navy, Omas Turquoise and the totally gorgeous, sheen-crazy Sailor Grenade.

I just finished my first year of fountain pen use, so I'm still tweaking the ink color selection process. At first, it was whatever was interesting!
I like the seasonal approach, and am leaning toward that currently. I have a nice blue-black, a gray-black, and a persimmon orange for something vivid going on with my correspondence pens. I plan to stick with those colors until Spring when I'll switch to a green, pink, and a deep blue for Texas Blue Bonnets.

Why is Diamine Golden Brown a horror? I speak for myself only. Now I will fully admit that this ink isnt newly bought, was probably my first Noodlers ink purchased but it has been stored in its original box. Ink was bought as I liked the shading, but lately there seems to be more yellow than brown, almost as though the dye components for the brown is breaking down. That last bit is pure speculation on my part as a way of describing what I think is happening. Shaking the bottle makes no difference whatsoever.
