I just looked through my stock of postage stamps. I have sheets of mostly recently issued stamps that I like, of which I bought an extra sheet for later use, plus some older stamps that I picked up here and there. And I added up their face value. It's just over $300.00. What am I going to do with all these postage stamps...?

Umm... I know that feeling! You need to send more letters! Oh, and it is almost the season to send cards far and wide.

I had a similar epiphany 2 weeks ago. I’m a little bit scared to tally up the total. But also now, a little bit curious... I think curiousity might be winning out now...
I haven’t even started buying Christmas stamps yet. Heaven help me.

Yes, but I'm waiting to send letters. Which means, I'm waiting to receive letters from pen pals to respond to. It must be off-season for writing letters. Usually, I get a letter or two every couple of days to respond to. In the last two weeks, I've received... none. I still go to the PO every day to... show my face, and... buy more stamps.... ...You need to send more letters!

Hey, just out of curiosity... I mailed your last letter the day or two before I headed out to Germany, and was kind of surprised your reply wasn’t waiting for me when I got back (not that I’m demanding you write, it’s just that usually your replies get here quicker than that). Since your reply pile is at zero, I just thought I’d check: my letter *did* make it to you, right? Or did your reply not make it to me? I assumed things must have just gotten busy for you, but if you (or I) wrote and it went missing, then maybe one of us might want to try again?

Yes, I received that letter. And in it you said that you'd let me know how your trip went when you got back. So I thought that the next letter would be from you telling me how your trip went. Oops! Send me a letter, or a message that I should send you a letter! But don't post about it here or all the nosey bodies on this forum will know that you're writing me a letter. And then they'll all want a letter from you also. And you'll... run out of ink responding to all the nosey bodies.... (Attention nosey body: I didn't mean you. I meant all the other nosey bodies....) Hey, just out of curiosity... Haha! Did I say that? It does sound like something I’d say. Private message coming soon.
And back on topic: curiousity killed the Katie, I tallied up my waiting-to-be-used stamps. I had over 180, and just a hair shy of $100 in value. A lot, but not nearly as bad as I was expecting. I always hate to use the last of a set of stamps I love, but I’ve taken to sticking particular favorites in my journal, and now using up the last of a beloved set doesn’t seem so bad.
Oh shoot, I just realized I didn’t include my vintage stamps in that total. Have to add maybe $30 and a zillion stamps more.

I'm not going to even think about it! However, I believe I can outdo you two!

The 'problem' with saving sheets of nice stamps is that I feel like I have to... save them. And it's 'worse' than collecting stamps, because I buy full $heets (<-- the $ is not a typo!) of them at a time. Isn't it hard to peel off, say, a single "Wonder Woman" stamp from a full sheet for use? Then you (meaning, I), have to use the full sheet because it's been... disfigured, and can no longer be saved.
I've noticed that the full sheets of stamps from the USPS include a diagram showing the location where that particluar sheet was printed on a larger plate of stamps. Do stamp collectors try to collect sheets from all the locations on a plate of stamps?! Do you know how much that would cost?! Now, that's something I don't want to think about.... Well, I like to think about it, but I don't want to think about collecting the full set of sheets from plates.... (Does the USPS sell full plates of stamps...?)

There are some people who are picky about sheet/stamp position. I bought stamps after a person went to buy individual stamps - he wanted the stamp next to the date on the edging, but if that was not available, then next to the dotty colour code thing on the edge would suffice.
I must admit that a full sheet of stamps does tend to look lovely (as do sheets of stickers) but once you say to yourself, I bought these to be used, and then use one, the rest follow quite happily for postage.
However, some themes, I must save one of ... to use on my next letter to ..., and then perhaps I forget and then use other stamps. I am rationing my use of Harry Potter stamps to those who I think are fans (or members of their family are), etc..

At the Post Office today, I asked if they'd gotten in the lastest (and final) stamp in the "Celebrating Lunar New Year" series, the "Year of the Boar" stamp. Yes! So I asked for six. The clerk asked which six stamps on the plate of 12 I'd like. No, no, no.... Not six stamps. Six sheets! It's a nice stamp! Got those and some other stamps for a total of $91.40....

Whoa! I just looked those up and they’re gorgeous! I might have to make yet one more “last trip” to the post office for stamps before the rate changes on the weekend. I thought I was done...but...I guess not.
