Did I read somewhere about a reduction in price of first class postage? You did in fact. I just read this story last night. It appears that for the first time in nearly 97 years the cost of a first-class mail is set to go down 2 cents from 49-cents to 47-cents on April 1st. (and no this isn't a "poisson d'avril" as we say here). As it turns out, it turns on a rather disturbing backstory. Apparently there was a pre-agreed 2 year price hike of 3-cents in 2014 for Congress to raise $4.6 billion in revenue it wanted. The Postmaster General is begging for the rates to remain the same as it will cost them more than $2 billion annually in losses. Standard mail, letters and postcards, make up 76% of the postal sales in the U.S. and the postal service is in a precarious position and realistically needs the funds as stamp prices are tied to inflation which hasn't increased considerably in a decade.
