If I were sure that an extremist letter would induce a couple of penpals...to quit writing to me, I'd write it straight away, instead of torturing myself about how to break up with them. That's brilliant. LOL. I'm happy to know or not know when it comes to politics/religion. I'm not living with my penpals, and could potentially have a long and happy correspondence on other topics if someone I _really_ disagreed with never brought their beliefs up. If I knew, then even if we never wrote about it, it could still sour my opinion of the person. I mean, I'm pretty tolerant but recent (USA) politics have taken a real turn for having a lack of middle ground. Hoping that gets better, soon, but who knows. The advantage of knowing, is we could potentially talk about politics or get stuff off our chests if we agreed. The challenge there is keeping track of who is "politics (or religion) safe". My little address spreadsheet doesn't have a "notes" column. In theory, one could have an interesting conversation about politics where you disagree, but I think that's hard to do. I should, however, make a note of people I can vent about (or celebrate) current events with, and know they feel similarly. I think it's just two, from here, that I know for sure fit that bill. A third, I could infer. The letter I'm writing now looks like it'll be 90% pen hobby with a few life anecdotes. I enjoy that kind of letter, too. That's another good note. OK to geek out about pens with? Or no.

I never inquire or study enough about my pens to come anywhere near geeking out on them

ginny Ha! Well said! I will be stealing that: I'm intolerant of the intolerant. Lol!!! You're welcome to do so
It's not my idea, though. The philosopher Karl Popper discussed this in his work 'The Open Society and Its Enemies'. There's a whole lot of info on that when you google 'Paradox of intolerance'
