If you receive a short letter or note are you likely to reply in kind? Or are all of your letters about the same length, or does it depend on the person you are replying to?
I have one pen friend who usually writes an 8-10 page letter, my replies are about the same length...usually written over a period of several days. But then we may only exchange letters every three months or so. Today I received what might be considered a note, small page one side, but most likely I will reply with my usual two page letter. I know people are busy and appreciate that they take time to say hello.

I try to stay about the same length as the letter I've received. That said if there is something they bring up that I wish to discuss in detail then I've been known to send a multiple page reply to a note. I try to keep handwritten letters short due to arthritis in my writing hand and if I get too wordy then I send a computer printed reply as it would take me several days to transcribe everything out by hand (I write all letters and even some of my postcard text on a computer first and then transcribe them). I write small so even a one page, front side only, letter is pretty wordy. I estimate they run 600-800 words depending on how small my font is on a particular night. I have some foldable mailers that I use to keep my word count just under 500 words that I use for introductory letters. All introductory letters are kept to one page so as to not frighten off potential pen pals

It depends on the letter/penpal - I have one who only ever sends short note cards, so my replies are about the same. Most of my other letters run at least front & back of an A5 sheet of stationery, but I have a couple penpals where front & back of 2-3 A4 sheets is not uncommon.

This is an interesting thread. For me it varies widely. In general, I try to match the length of my letters to theirs, but sometimes mine gets longer if I have a funny story to share, or something like that. In general, my letters tend to be front and back of an A4 sheet of stationery, or sometimes 2 of those pages (often if I’m adding in a 5Q too). With my teeny, tiny handwriting, I’m pretty sure this usually matches their multi page letters in length. However I do have a few penpals that prefer to write short cards or smaller A5 size letters, and I generally respond the same way. On the flip side, I think I’ve also mentioned a long-time penpal I’m particularly close to, who generally sends 20-28 page letters, and I have no trouble responding back with 15-20 page letters (in my tiny handwriting) of my own...although writing those letters are often multi-day affairs. But I particularly enjoy her letters, and always look forward to them. So I guess my letters vary a lot in length. It depends on who they are written to, and what the recepient seems to prefer. But in general, between 1 and 2 pages, front and back.

On average mine are three or four pages of A5 written on both sides no matter how long the letter I received.
If it was a card....I’ll send a card in return.

My letters vary depending on the length of the letter or usual length of letters that I receive from that pen-pal. I have answered a post card with a multi-page letter if it is someone who usually sends long letters. I also send post cards when strapped for time with the promise of a longer letter later.
