I beg pardon if this topic's been broached previously, I searched three times.
Have you sent fan mail to an author, musician, politician, actor, director, or other notable you admire and received a response beyond what you expected?
I received a notecard from Ellen Conford (US juvenile/YA author), a signed photo from Dick Van Dyke (didn't request one, but provided a SASE in case), and a larger autographed picture from Mel Brooks in place of the postcard available to me at my local cinema goods store. Stephen Fry sent a response, not a form letter but a direct reply to my question, via his personal assistant an ocean and continent away from where I addressed.

Yes, years ago I sent an email to a politician and got a nice personal reply. I was not a fan, but felt he was treated very unfairly in the national media and I felt sorry for him. Even though I was not a voter he expressed his appreciation for my support.

I have only sent one fan letter, but afterwards, I didn't get the buzz I get when writing to new people via InCoWriMo/LetterMo.

I have never written fan mail to public figures like that, but there are times when I have really been touched by the story line of a book and have wanted to send a thank you note to the author. But, I think it, and haven't followed through with it yet.
