Unfortunately, coupled with an increase in snail mail post charges by Australia Post, the handling of letter mail Downunder has recently worsened. Inbound letters from U.K., Europe and the U.S. are now taking between 14 and 21 days to be delivered as opposed to around 10 to 15 days previously. Outbound mail has slowed but the effect is not as significant as the delivery phase is out of Australia Post's clutches.
We seem to have an attitude in the country that letter mail is 'old hat' and a thing of the past that the current Australia Post administrators would like to see eradicated. However, on a positive side and unlike Canada, mail continues to be 'delivered' Monday to Friday, so I suppose one should be grateful for small mercies.
So if your pen pal happens to reside in Straya then take into account turnaround times have lengthened somewhat. I'm lucky that I only have to suffer it for half the year, and for the rest I can rely on The Royal Mail - which still has a fabulous letter handling system in comparison to the rest of the world.

No need to apologise my dear, I'm sure it's something to do with all the posties wearing shorts over there. I know on the one day of summer last year our postman wore them he delivered next doors mail to us and ours to a house 2 streets away! Luckily I know your letters are worth waiting for so I don't mind, if it was the gas bill I'd be buying him shorts every week!

That reminds me of the policy of British Railways executives in the '60s that their job was to provide 'managed decline'.

That reminds me of the policy of British Railways executives in the '60s that their job was to provide 'managed decline'. That approach is achieved indirectly here. The current CEO of Australia Post was the deputy CEO of one of the major four banks before his appointment. What would he know about postal systems ... BA (and I don't mean British Airways). But his expertise is managing redundancies. By appointing someone from a major bank, Australia Post were assured of getting someone who knew just as little about providing service.
