At home, especially when it's nice enough to sit outside, I use a lap-desk. A simple, inexpensive, kidney-shaped board with a couple of low profile pillows on the underside, that, strangely enough, sits on my lap. It's highly portable and on most chairs it provides support to my entire forearm.

+1 for a lap-desk, which I use quite often. At other times, if I have my laptop close, I'll shut the lid and use it as an impromptu lap-desk.
