This is something Mia said in another thread and even though it is true, I would hardly know where to meet penpals nowadays apart from the internet.
Remember back in the days when there still wasn't the possibility to be online? Where did you find your penpals then?
My first 'penpals' were family members, I wrote letters to my grandmother and later to my cousin. One penpal I met during vacation, we exchanged addresses and wrote letters to each other. I also remember having met one penpal by answering on an ad in a magazine. All this seems rather strange today..

There was a periodical called 'Little Nickel' long, long ago that was published every two weeks, that was practically all ads, most of them for industrial equipment and automotive parts, but reliably there were penpal listings from many countries. I wrote replies to some ads and eventually placed one of my own.

I've only been pen palling for a couple of years so all my experience has come from the internet. I do however remember seeing the odd magazine when I was younger and adverts in the back of the sunday papers. I also seem to recall a school pen pal project arranged by the teachers but I was too busy riding my bike to worry about things like that!

There was a magazine for children that came with the Sunday newspapers and there were many ads. This was back in 1992. I placed an ad and got around 50 letters, I remember the day the postman brought them and the surprise of my father when he saw them. Good, old times.

I used the International Youth Service when I was at school. Still have a few letters from that. School exchanges too but letters ceased maybe a year later with the exchange student.
Adulthood - I bought a free-ads paper, Loot, and saw in it an ad form allowing you to advertise in sister papers around the world, so I did for penpals. 1994-5 I think. I am still in touch with one from Sweden. I had some other replies too but not that many lasted more than a letter.
I've heard people have found penpals through Friendship Books (FBs).

I had a penpal arranged in school too, but that only lasted a couple letters. I have been writing letters with my aunt for as long as I can remember. I did try to turn a few of my friends into penpals but that didn't work out, I wrote a lot of outgoing letters and my mail box stayed empty!
