I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we can discuss old letters we have come across. We may know the correspondents, or they may be strangers we discovered in an antique shop or on eBay. Either way, there is something surreal about reading words written decades ago speaking to us over the years.

I attended a family reunion this summer, and a highlight for me was the chance to read a collection of letters from my grandpa to my grandma one summer shortly before they married. They were separated for the summer because of his work, and they wrote several times a week. Money was tight, and they couldn't afford even the expense of a long distance phone call. I took pictures of some of the pages that were especially meaningful. Here are two of the shots. For those who have received letters from me, some of the handwriting will look familiar!

Wonderful stuff. And great idea for a thread. Maybe even a sub-forum.
Many people collect vintage letters. They are for sale on eBay, for instance. I have a very small number I've collected over the years. The oldest is from the 1870's if I remember correctly. The most moving was from a British army nurse at a field hospital during WW I informing a woman of the death of her husband. The handwriting on all of them is astounding.
