I've been in touch with some penpals for over 20 years, but I must admit that during the last years we've passed from snail mail to e-mail or phone calls - or vice versa: We knew each other in person for many years and only later started writing to each other after my friend moved abroad.
As to "snail mail only" I guess I belong somewhere into the 10-to-19-years category because during my studies and the early years in job, most contacts fizzled out.

I have been corresponding with a few college buddies for over 20 years. At least one or more letters each every year. With fountain pens for the last 3. I entered 3 until I realized I really had been doing this a while. I rarely, basically never, communicate with them via email, texts etc. We Facebook only when something is time sensitive which is rare or there are kid or grandbaby pics.

I'm quite new to all this letter writing malarkey so my longest correspondence is a little under 2 years. So far though it's proving most enjoyable and I have met some really nice people. (there has been a couple of idiots too)

I've only been doing this for just over a year now.

My longest correspondence is about 6 years (and counting), but it's through e-mail. My penpal is blind, so this is not really a choice. Snail mail? I've got a friend for a year or 3 with whom I communicate in many ways including snail mail, but the letter writing is on and off. The rest is under a year, but hey I'm still young

Someone I once wrote to also did letters on cassette tapes to people. I'm not convinced I sound good on tape (the message I have on my answering machine sounds strange too)

When my eldest was 5 years old, I picked up a magazine that had a pen-pal column in it. Thinking it would be fun for my two boys to learn abou tother people and places and see where letters came from, I wrote in.
That son will turn 27 this summer, and I'm still in regular contact with two of the 150 or so people who wrote to us. With one, I've moved to email and Facebook; with the other, I exchange little notebook letters a few times a year (she fills a tiny notebook and sends to me, then I fill one and send to her). We have also met in person, just four or so years ago.

My best friend and I met when we were 12 years old. Two years later she moved away and we have been corresponding ever since. 55 years of letter writing and still going strong .
