The article headline from www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/article/2024/may/17/is-the-writing-on-the-wall-for-the-british-seaside-postcard “I couldn’t be arsed sending them” is such a sad comment from one day tripper to Blackpool. Others would rather buy rude-shaped rock candy instead of postcards, and email a picture they've taken themselves. All my childhood trips to the seaside, I remember seeing a plethora of postcards for sale. Now, seems not so many seaside places sell them, but may now be more common in towns/cities. (I can feel a poll coming on, but not sure yet what the question will be, nor the responses.)

Good postcards are hard to find. I just sent one off in a letter. They don’t have room enough to really communicate anything. There are photos that I would find difficult to take. I just sent one off today to Malaysia, it had an image of my state with images of what is to be seen in various locations. So, I grab postcards when I see them, but usually enclose them with a letter.

It’s shocking as the postage rates are ridiculous, let’s compare to some other places the cost of international mail for a postcard -
Japan - 100yen (£0.50) USA - $1.55 (£1.22) France - €1.96 (£1.67) Canada - $2.92 (£1.68) Norway - 31kr (£2.27) Spain - €1.70-2.10 (£1.45-1.79) South Africa - 12.75r (£0.55) Australia $3.00 (£1.58)
Those are just the ones I randomly selected but even expensive places (Norway) it’s 10% cheaper than it is here

That’s sad that British Seasides shops are not selling postcards anymore. I do find it’s harder to find good postcards now. Not many people send them in this digital age. It’s becoming lost art, like letter writing. I was sending postcards many years ago when there were no text/social media, and stopped for a while. Then about 3 years ago, I discovered a stamps and comic book store near my house. I found many used postcards that were written many years ago. Some went back as far as 1940-50’s. They were written by someone who immigrated to US writing to their family in Sweden, or a woman traveling in Europe writing her whereabouts to parents, etc. I felt like looking at snapshots of their life. I ended up buying these used postcards:) After that, I started to send postcards again when I travel, when I can find the time. (Who knows where they might end up, years later? )
