Something to think about this morning. What's your ideal number of replies in your reply pile? How many letters are in there before you start feeling nervous about it? I set up the poll to be easy to answer, though you can probably think about the problem in terms of time and not number of letters. BTW, tsundoku is a Japanese term I learned this year.

In a perfect world, I'd have maybe 5 or 6...Currently, though, I'm sitting at 39, some of which were written well over a year ago. At this point, I'll get to them when I get to them, but it would be nice to get back down to a much more manageable level.

About 10-20 would be fine for me. Alas, my pile is much higher and has been a bit of an eyesore for me, but I cannot help it, it's just the way it is - the past few years have been challenging here (not so much because of the pandemic, but for other reasons - health-related, job-related, family-related *sigh*), and no matter how hard I try, I haven't been able to catch up because there has always been one thing or another. I'm lucky that my friends are so understanding!

To me five letters In my inbox isn’t too daunting. I usually reply with about the same number of pages I receive and a 10 or 12 page letter isn’t done at one sitting. .i usually reply in the same order that the letters are received, but sometimes I break the rule when I have only enough time to write a short letter. Right now there are 8 letters in my inbox.

Personally I prefer one or two letters in the reply pile. Enough to make me think about how I'm going to reply without feeling the pressure to do so straight away. I like getting to inbox zero but not stay there for weeks on end either.... that's something I have to think about.
I start to get anxious once I have more than five or six letters, especially if they've been sitting for a while.

I think 5-6 will be ideal, but I have a little more as sometimes I get behind. I stopped replying chronologically sometime ago. Some penpals don’t write as often which is ok. So if someone writes me twice a year, I match with that pace for my replies. I try to reply sooner to people who write regularly, so they don’t have to wait for long. Eventually I get caught up, of course

After one incowrimo a few years back, letter writer's block hit, and I had over 100 letters in my reply pile. Definitely daunting to look at. The letters did eventually get replied to.
My preferred pile is much more than a few. Less than a handful, perhaps I slow down writing to minimise the risk of a zero reply pile: perhaps it makes me feel lonely, with no one to write to! Having penfriend letters to reply to, perhaps I don't feel so alone, with my friends waiting for the conversation to continue.

I'm fine if it gets to 10, especially if half of them are going to be 1-2 page replies. I would like it to occasionally get DOWN to 3-5 or so.

I don’t think about it so much in terms of how big the pile is, but how long the pile has been sitting there. Like ginny , the necessities of life sometimes get in the way of my nice, relaxing letter writing. I feel pretty good about life if I reply to a letter in under two months, but that hasn’t been a consistent event in a couple of years.

Well, I've let my pile grow again, size and time...
