I'm fairly sure we'll end up with the two-speed postal service here in Germany. Which is OK with me for domestic and European mail. With overseas mail, it's a bit different, I think... but we'll have to wait and see what they'll come up with.
I laughed very hard about this: Packages and letters could be delivered by regular postmen under new system
This 'new' system is what I actually grew up with - that was when the German postal service was still entirely state-run. They went private in the mid-90s, and from then on, postal service went downhill, in my humble opinion. When I was a kid, the postman brought everything, from letters over telegrams (those sometimes came in the middle of the night!) to parcels, and when there were two consecutive holidays (like Christmas Day and Boxing Day), there was postal delivery on one of those days.
On a sidenote... A good thing about going private was that telecommunication was separated from the postal service. In the olden days, you had to apply for a telephone connection at the postal service (Deutsche Bundespost), and it took forever to get things sorted. I waited for almost four weeks to get a phone installed in the early 90s.
