A card is now in the hands of Canada Post. Kudos to the teacher for this, a nice departure from email, text, and instawhatever. A friend in Australia got involved in inter-generational pen pals through an school and the uptake by the kids was enormous and overwhelming, suggesting lots of pent-up interest and opportunities. Be nice to see more teachers with such initiatives. Thanks for telling us about this.

It's the exact kind of event that I would have loved to take part in even if my granddaughter wasn't in the class so I thought I'd share the address and details as other letter writers might like to take part. I love trying to expose younger folks to the adventure of writing and receiving letters in the mail. I can't say I've converted very many with my efforts but then I didn't really get into letter writing until I was older despite an elementary teacher of mine signing us up for pen pals years ago.

I could write one from NC, though I have no idea what, other than a heart, should be on a pre-k valentine. Google a message heart image and print that...

I just went to the local Dollar General (but a Dollar Tree would work as well) and grabbed one of the two for a dollar cards with what seemed like the cutest kid's type illustration. I couldn't even tell you what the message said but generally they're all just generic sentimental thoughts in one form or another.

Inside I simply wrote "Happy Valentine's Day from Porum, Oklahoma". I figure they'll get 20+ cards from Oklahoma but mine should be the only one from Porum.

One of my pen pals from NYC sent a New York postcard that had their state bird and flower but then the state flower there is a rose which fits. Oklahoma's state flower is mistletoe which is a non flowering tree leach which doesn't convey the same message as roses do in relation to Valentine's Day.

I used to send postcards to a class in the US. They showed us the map of the world and markers to show where our postcards came from and a string link to our postcards around the map. It was wonderful to see. I used to send other stuff as well. I might do it to your granddaughters group as well Gary S

My daughter told me last night that they've already got a pretty good sized stack of cards in right now so they're supposed to start opening them today. She plans to attend the Valentine's Day class party to get an idea of how they end up displaying their haul. I know they'll appreciate any cards they receive from anywhere in the world but those exotic International cards will really be a treat. Thanks for taking part.

You can see photos over at World of Snail Mail's Facebook page but the class has received 45 out of the 50 states so far. The kids revolted and demanded candy and cupcakes rather than keeping their noses to the grindstone so there are still unopened cards. The teacher has decided that they'll open some cards every day from now until Friday so hopefully they'll get all 50 states. Missing states include Wyoming, Alabama, Virginia, Maryland and New Hampshire at this point but volunteers in Alabama and Virginia are supposed to have sent cards from at least those two states.

Latest update! The class has received 180+ cards as of Feb. 21st from 49 states and 7 foreign countries. The only missing state is now Delaware. It's my bad as on the blurry map they provided Delaware looked to be part of eastern Maryland and the dot above it was for New Jersey. Still, someone must have a pen pal, fifth cousin seven times removed, old prom date they've been trying to live down for 35 years or ex spouse living in Delaware. Isn't the President (supposedly) from Delaware? I know he now lives in Washington, DC but surely there's somebody left there and they didn't just shut off all the lights when he moved away. Shake the family tree hard and see what falls out with an address in the needed state. Late cards are fine, a state postcard is fine and even a hastily scrawled note with a heart drawn in red crayon works to get these little adorable 5 year olds to their goal of 50 states. The teachers says they've never had a response this good and never come close to getting all 50 states before but I know we can make it happen. Do it for the Gipper. Heck, do it for crazy Aunt Mildred over in Delaware. She's been waiting by the phone for your call since you graduated high school.
EDIT: We have a New Hampshire volunteer from an InCoWriMo Facebook group and a Maryland volunteer from Lettermo!!!
