When you sit down to write a letter where is it...a writing desk, at the dining room table, on your deck? What do you think makes a good environment for writing letters. Do you like to listen to music as you write, have a hot cup a, good lighting, pens close at hand, etc. Do you write mostly in the morning, mid day, or evening?

In front of my computer squashed in with the keyboard, listening to the tv and occasionally watching if its something exciting. Cup of tea to the side. I wrote when I can as I work full time some times so I grab every moment I can

For ideal letter writing focus, it's at my desk downstairs. About half the time, I'll write in the little spaces in my day, which means I write upstairs, either at a computer desk or at the kitchen table. I'll usually end up talking to someone or needing to do some parenting task in that setting, so it isn't ideal, but it is easy to get started again.
When I write at my desk, there's no music, maybe coffee. Strong artificial light from overhead, supplemented with a desk lamp from the left side so it doesn't cast shadows from my hand onto the writing. Pen options exist permanently at the desk, but I'll often bring some from elsewhere in the house. Paper and envelopes live in the desk.
I think I would prefer a main floor room with nice windows for writing but we don't really have a nice spot for that in our house.

My instagram feed is a masterclass in writing correspondence in all sorts of places: trains, coffee bars, airport bars, town markets, restaurants, AirBNB rentals, airplanes.... But my home office is a simple table from IKEA, probably 42x30" (120x80cm, give or take), that used to be my dining table. I keep a few things on there for easy writing access, though they have to get moved from time to time whenever a typewriter needs to be there. I'll listen to music when I write and the mood strikes; usually classical or ambient music. If possible I'll find an internet radio station from the location I'm writing to such as the BBC, ORF (Austria), or MDR/NDR (Germany) and try to give that a fair shake for an hour or two.

I've recently been back out writing letters in cafes again! No good for typewritten ones though. I have a little fold up table I can use to hold the typewriter. Else, I write at my computer desk or my bureau.

For those of you who write sitting in a cafe or any public place , do you ever have someone ask you about letter writing? I know I saw a woman writing a letter siting in our local coffee shop. I stopped and asked her about her letter writing and we got into a nice discussion. Have any of the others of you had or done the same thing? Also if you write with a fountain pen have you had anyone ask about it?

I usually don't get any questions about using a fountain pen, just that my cursive handwriting is "beautiful".... which to me is not that great.

I write in silence. Lately I’ve been using my light box which necessitates being at my desk. Otherwise I write from my chair (the wing backed one like my grandmother had) or in the back yard. Tea is required at each location.

I write at my work desk in our spare room/office. It's a sit stand desk and though I mostly write sitting, I sometimes stand too.

I’ve noticed that some of my fountain pens do not enjoy being used in the hot sun. The ink just starts dripping out. I’d guess maybe some of my newer pens wouldn’t do that, but I usually use vintage pens. So, that discourages me from writing outside. We seem to have two seasons here: cold, and hot, neither of which is great for writing outside.
All of that said, it’s overcast and calm this morning and would be nice letter writing weather…but I’m all caught up on my replies.

At home, I write at the dining room table, which brims with my most frequently used pens and ink. If I'm writing early on a cool morning, a cup of hot chocolate is at hand. if the morning sun is shining through the enclosed patio and into the dining room, I write by sunlight. In Paris, I write a lot of postcards while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate and a croissant on a café terrace. Conveniently, a mailbox is across the street from the café a block from my hotel. For the postcards, I use a Waterman Rollerball pen that my colleagues at the day job gave me for a promotion back in 2006. I address the postcards in my hotel room before going out, so I don't have to bring my Day-Timer with me. Once in a blue moon - for example after a cousin's First Holy Communion - I send a letter or card from Paris, written with a fountain pen.

Can confirm Canada has but two seasons... but I thought they were "winter" and "construction".
