For those of you who write sitting in a cafe or any public place , do you ever have someone ask you about letter writing? I know I saw a woman writing a letter siting in our local coffee shop. I stopped and asked her about her letter writing and we got into a nice discussion. Have any of the others of you had or done the same thing? Also if you write with a fountain pen have you had anyone ask about it? Yes, there was an occasion, can't recall when but I think before I started this forum. I was in a certain fast food restaurant drinking cups of tea, while hubby & son were in the cinema across the way for the then new season of Doctor Who which was being screen. A group of teenage lads came over. They were fascinated. I was using a cheap Parker pen (type aimed at the school/college market), containing colourful Diamine ink. They said my handwriting was neat! However, the person I was writing to, had beautiful handwriting. Other occasions, I've been asked if I'm doing homework, or if I'm a teacher marking work.

I write my letters in calm environments. When I'm alone at home, I write in my bedroom, because I have a big and flat desk, but otherwise I tend to take the first lovely café parisien during my walks in Paris. I have nothing against people doing their stuff around me, but I try to take a table for myself, and I rarely write without my earpods on with some YouTube stuff. I really need my "bubble" to focus enough. Recently, I've discovered that cats don't bother/perturbate my letter writing much, as I've written a long letter in Le Café des Chats, rue Sedaine.

I write either at the desk in my office at home or the dining room table, typically in the evening. If I'm at the dining room table I light a few candles. Either place I usually have a drink by my side. A nice cup of mint tea or an Old Fashioned depending on the day. I almost always wear headphones, although I don't always listen to anything. When I do, it's classical and instrumental music.

I have an inexpensive “lap-desk” that I use on the front verandah for 6 months of the year, or occasionally in my living room lazy boy chair. Otherwise at home I write at my desk (AKA an Ikea table) with its window looking out across the road to our neighbour’s wonderful garden.
Pre-covid, when I was out and about, I would write in parks, cafés, train stations, libraries , and anywhere else I might linger for awhile . I’m an old man, so largely invisible when out, but it’s surprising how people notice and remark on me writing with one of those “weird old pens”.
I find coffee or tea is a good lubricant to the writing process.

I usually write at my dining room table or the desk my dear husband built for me during the time-that-shall-not-be-named when there were four of us vying for locations to work in the house. If I really want to concentrate, I listen to music. I know that seems counter-intuitive, but I can tune out the music. I can’t tune out the other random house noises.

Because I type my letters I am at my computer desk, tv to the left on top of a table, tea urn and cold water urn to the left under the tv table, printer to the right and everything else within arms reach. Fans galore everywhere trying to keep me cool in summer lol

When you sit down to write a letter where is it...a writing desk, at the dining room table, on your deck? What do you think makes a good environment for writing letters. Do you like to listen to music as you write, have a hot cup a, good lighting, pens close at hand, etc. Do you write mostly in the morning, mid day, or evening? I'm either lying on my bed, a coffee shop or the dining room table. Mostly likely my bed. Any place is good as long as you are comfortable. I'm almost always listening to music, I have rain sounds on right now. So relaxing, and I should just wait for it to rain outside. Half the time it is anyway. I normally drink water. And a lot of it. Good lighting, and pens are a must. I like to change colours mid thought sometimes.
I write whenever the urge strikes, or when I get a letter. I like to answer questions about things at the same time. AKA ALL THE TIME!
