I am a pencil user. I mostly write my letters and do my journaling in pencil and use pencils more than any writing tools for all other purposes as well.
I've found some nice papers for pencils but there has been no hard and fast rule. I've used some very rough cotton papers that are great with pencils and others that are so soft that a 2B tears right through them; smooth and silky papers that show pencil well, others where the graphite slides right over without making a mark. Brand-wise, I find Clairfontaine is one of the latter - too smooth, built for fountain pens it seems. I have yet to find a reliable brand or line that is both consistent quality and lets the graphite pop regardless of pencil type. I bought a no-name pack of journals from Amazon last year and those have so far been the best - a semi-grainy cream-coloured paper that soaks up the graphite and shows it off without wearing down the point too fast or creating a debossed crater with each letter. Alas, like many no-name Amazon items I can't find it again.
Any suggestions for pencil users - both loose-leafe letter writing paper and travel journal-style saddle-stitched A5 notebooks mostly sought.
Cheers!
Mark

I have never thought too much about pencils and paper as I find most papers seem ok, but, I do know a blog/website that is called Wood and Graphite that might be able to assist.

Art/craft stores usually stock sketchbooks. In my experience, they are a bit toothier than the paper that most fountain pen folks prefer. I've always assumed that this paper was designed for pencils...
I've got a spiral bound A5ish pad of Strathmore "Vision" sketch paper that I like really well. It's perforated, so can be used for letters as well.
Just a thought, cheers!

Great - thanks for that suggestion! I do some drawing/sketching but the paper I use for that is just a bit *too* toothy for writing - I've tried that with my Fabriano sketchbook and it wears the points down too fast for clear writing (and smudges a lot worse). I need something in-between the sketch paper and pen paper - I may visit an art supply store and grab a few candidates this weekend to test out though! Fair enough Another one you might try is Fabriano EcoQua. I use it for fountain pens all the time, so it's not super toothy. But, it's not all slick like Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Black n Red, etc... I've heard that Leuchtturm1917 is a somewhat less slick but quality choice as well, but I haven't ever actually tried it. Don't get me wrong I love the slick papers for FP use! But yeah, for pencil use, they probably aren't the greatest.

Every once in a while, I just love to write with a pencil. Thanks for reminding me of that!
