The main reason I haven't ventured into typewriters is that, unlike fountain pens, they require comparatively massive amounts of space to store, and maybe even just to use. I suppose I could fit _one_, but that way lies madness. This! This is my fear! So I haven’t let myself even look at them… Exactly! It seems like you would need to have a large dedicated work room to be able to lay them all out properly.

radellaf , you are not wrong regarding the storage for typewriters. I have 6 that I use regularly that are just stacked up in my dining room since I have nowhere else to really put them. And that's all I can have, unless I find a better/bigger place to store them. If you host dinner parties, those stacked-up typewriters would sure make for a good conversation starter!

I'm really interested in this, i haven't used an actual typewriter for over 30 odd years, but i always loved it and loved the sound. do i need any special paper if i do this? do most use just normal printer paper or other special stationery?

Last night I finished a typewritten missive, typos included, on some patterned refill paper I bought ages ago in Paperchase. I've also previously used Basildon Bond, or was it Three Candlesticks, and some other generic papers. I even managed a typing a postcard last year. However, typing on lined... perhaps need to readjust after carriage return, my typewriter has a couple of settings for line spacings I use but isn't always perfect for the lined papers...

I've bought vintage typing paper and used that, but I've also used regular printing paper, vintage notepaper, contemporary stationery, and cardstock.

You may find it's a bit of an addiction, not unlike fountain pens. Welcome to the club! The main reason I haven't ventured into typewriters is that, unlike fountain pens, they require comparatively massive amounts of space to store, and maybe even just to use. I suppose I could fit _one_, but that way lies madness. radellaf, I just laughed out loud. I only have one. I have no room for more.

So far I’ve found that most paper works well enough. They seem much less particular than fountain pens.

Have you had to work hard to resist buying another, or just happy with the one you got? I'm watching a show "Good Girls Revolt" about reporters and there are a lot of typewriters in it. They do look cool and all, but they're the big, probably electric variety. I'm not sure I'd even have room to store one, much less space to take it out and use. On the dinner table, maybe. THAT would get me some dirty looks. I guess I could keep one in the car and take it out at some hipster coffee shop in the area. If there is one. If I ever start regularly going to a coffee shop again. I think I got half my colds/flus from those places, perhaps especially from the kids that ran around touching everything while their parent ordered a drink.

The biggest factor is probably the fact that I have zero desire to restore anything. I just want it to work.

Aside from my wife (and, possibly, the late Gina Lollobrigida, circa 1964 or thereabouts) the Hermes 3000 is the loveliest shape my eye has ever known. This 60's model, along with its other sea-foam green permutations that stretched into the 70's, caused me to forsake all other typewriters. It put my emerald green Voss to shame and sent my beloved Groma Kolibri packing.

That looks like a nice machine. Does it type nicely?

That looks like a nice machine. Does it type nicely? The Hermes was Swiss. I had thought my German Kolibri nice, but that was like a stamping machine on an assembly line: thunk! thunk! thunk! Masterful, to be sure, but not elegant. The Hermes is solid and simultaneously elegant in feel. I used to be a typewriter collector; now I am a Hermes owner. All the others were sold off years ago.
