An interesting conundrum. I have just finished writing to my mother down in Australia and on weighing the walrussed ... errr ... sealed envelope it came to 9.7 grams. So I assumed that postage would be £1 in accordance with the latest Royal Mail rates. As I am using up old denominations, I adhered four stamps totalling £1 but discovered that as each stamp weighed approximately 0.1gm the total weight of the stamped envelope was now 10.1 grams - which was now over the limit. If the Rate Police at Royal Mail weigh the envelope it will be over the limit but without the stamps, it wouldn't have been.
Any U.K. members know the technical answer to this situation?

I've no idea how strict they are. It might be worth taking it to the post office and having it weighed. The post office might even cancel the stamps for you - perhaps Royal Mail then would assume correct postage is applied. You could ask Royal Mail via twitter.

I would hope that they would take the weight before postage as that's what they do when you take things to the counter for posting, but being royal mail who knows!

What did you do in the end? I posted it. It hasn't boomeranged yet.
