Beautiful article! Thanks for posting this. I also keep a few letters and postcards in books. Humans are so remarkably alike that we can take some chances, write to strangers and find so much in common. It's apparently just a intuitive way to store special letters (!).
I used to teach writing and one lecture was about the love letter and why it was so darn romantic. It's a fun college classroom discussion that explores the intimacy of the written word. Some students would reflect that they could hear their lover's voice in closer proximity (whispered in their ear) when silently reading a letter than they could speaking in person. The paper and the script are talismans.
