I'm eager to hear what others say, but to start this off... I like it when the writer gets a little personal - in the sense of telling me a little about his or her life. I don't need it to be highly private or anything (although that can be welcome if I've gotten to know someone well enough and we get along nicely), but it's nice to open the door into someone's life a little bit. I've learned a few interesting commonalities about others thanks to them being willing to do this (and perhaps because of my own [perceived ] openness. I'm also a sucker for really good writing, too. We seem to have a disproportionate number of people here that can manage that, too.

I enjoy a casual feel to a letter, so that it doesn’t feel forced, almost a stream of consciousness kind of thing. My pen pals can write about things that I have no frame of reference for, but if it’s written the right way, I’m fascinated or nodding my head. I’m struggling to come up with the right word. Authentic. That’s it. I love an authentic letter.

A good letter creates that frame of reference. And a good correspondence will often fill in that frame over time.
