Oh, I forgot, I did meet a penpal at a Postcrossing meet-up.
Oh, and a couple via school exchanges all those years ago!

I've been to Sheffield and Lichfield before but never made Bristol. It is one which would be good if jumping off from Cardiff.

Have you gone somewhere with the express purpose of meeting a penpal and everything else is not as important?

I used to write to a lovely lady in Kent who shared my love of nature and spent a day in May 1992 taking her around a few of the local nature reserves. Two months later I went to stay with her for a week and we had an amazing time exploring the areas she watched wildlife in Sadly she passed away a few years ago tho' I still have all her lovely chatty letters and occasionally get them out to read again.

I've met a few penpals. As to a penpal from Norway, we met four times, twice in Germany and twice in Norway, the first time when we were 15/16 years old and the last time when we were 38/39.
When I was 18 or 19 I visited a penpal in Italy. 20 hours on the train.
About the same time I invited a penpal from Indonesia who was in the Netherlands visiting relatives. I didn't know that she needed a visa to enter Germany (that was in the 1980s). I was so much looking forward to meeting her when the phone suddenly rang. The border police had kindly asked her to leave the train and to take the next one back.
I also remember fondly Christmas 1989. The Berlin Wall had fallen six weeks earlier and my East German penpal was able to visit me for Christmas. Yay, memorable Christmas.
All penpals I've met were exactly how I had imagined them to be.

I have! Sometimes it went great, sometimes it was awful. I suppose that's the risk of meeting a pen pal in person. My worst experience also broke a friendship of 8 years. When I met my friend in person she was completely different from the friend in the letters. She was quiet, rude, nervous and complained about everything. We met in the Netherlands, both of us were far away from home and there was no way to go back earlier, as we both had plane tickets. I guess some people use a different personality when writing, and their real self can only be seen in real life. My great experiences made it worth to keep on trying, I had wonderful meetings in London, Vienna and Paris.

I just met two pen pals (separately) on a trip to Toronto. Both meetings were great.

Yes, I did. Many many years ago. We live different continents. I visited them for holidays and they visited me during their honeymoon in my country:)
Planning to visit my longtime penpal, in Great Britain, who I never met but we correspond regularly over 20 years, to stay in touch.

I met my Italian pen pals, one of them a few times, including when I was invited to her wedding, after 10+ years of correspondence. I also met my Estonian pen pal when she came to Italy. It was great to meet them, it added to our friendship :-)

I met two of my pen pals in Toronto last week and it was great. I am looking forward to meeting some (and some meeting again) at the Philly Pen Show the weekend. Hoping the snow doesn't get in th way too badly.
Whoops! Just realized I already posted about this. Sorry about that.
