Fantastic set-up and instructions. My cases came from the Container Store and I used purchased inserts. Thanks for the compliments, Ira. Letter is going in the post to you first thing in the morning. I'll be looking for it.

Well done you guys, cool way to save money. If you don't mind me asking, what was the price comparison against buying them? If I had Blue Peter badge I'd send it to you! (Even though I don't think you used a cornflakes box did you?) Migo wants a gold Blue Peter Badge, please. Roughly, if we bought pre-formed inserts from the U.S. it would have cost us about £5 per drawer. Opposed to that we spent £1 on dowel, £1 on felt, allow say 20p for double sided tape, and nothing for the board as you could use any scrap cardboard, card or ply for that. So our cost was less than half. But we think what we've done is actually better than the pre-formed inserts as it certainly looks better and is softer on the pens. Thanks for the costing Murfie, tell Migo she can have a gold one but it may not be authentic! After all the whole ethos of Blue Peter was to make it yourself, speaking of which it's almost time to start the advent crown. Now where's my tinsel?

I made an BP advent crown one year and I didn't use fire-retardant tinsel. It caught fire when I let the candles burn too low. I got into BIG trouble with my mum and dad Do you remember the make-your-own Tracy Island?

I had such a crush on that girl, I was never interested in making the model I just wanted to watch her .

I honestly took an oatmeal container, cut it down to size, vacuumed the remaining oatmeal out, and then glued fabric on. You can also use scrap booking paper too. any photos to share?

I have a 6" high by 4"x 4"wooden box with a hinged top and a foam insert with holes for 10 pens. It is too short for something like an Edison Collier or MB 149 but great for an average sized pen. I think it originally was a Lavenger product. I like the hinged cover, especially for black hard rubber pens, because it protects the pens from sunlight and fading.
Of course you could make your own holder using a nice piece of oak or maple and a drill press. Use a bit just a bit larger than the diameter of your largest pen and space your holes. Judging by my pens about 3 1/4" would be about the right depth. If sanded, stained, and a durable finish applied it wouldn't look to bad on your desk.
