I recently found some nice old airmail paper. It's a bit thin and translucent, so it bugged me that most of my inks (which tend to the dark and saturated side) showed through pretty badly from the back side of the paper. I'm not talking about bleed through, the paper works quite nicely with fountain pen ink. It's just so thin that you can easily make out the writing on the back of the pages. So, I decided that I needed a less saturated ink that would play well with bible paper I decided that a nice shady grey ink would be a good color to have in the stable, so I hunted around and found where Goulet Pens sells a grey ink sampler pack! So, I got the samples in the mail the other day and dug out a dip pen. Here's the list of colors: Diamine, Earl Grey Herbin, Gris Nuage Noodler's, Lexington Grey Diamine, Graphite iroshizuku, fuyu-syogun Lamy, Agate iroshizuku, kiri-same Diamine, Silver Fox In the end, I decided to go with the fuyu-syogun... It behaved really well (as you would expect from iroshizuku), and I liked the cool silvery color. I thought the Diamine Graphite was a great dark grey, almost a light black... But, I was looking for something lighter. Have any of you guys got a favorite not-so-saturated ink? cheers!

Thanks for the comparisons! I've been going through my Gray Phase lately, and bought a few bottles willy-nilly. And I wanted the ink to shade, too. Diamine Silver Fox is too pale unless it's in a broad gusher. Fuyu-Syogan is lovely. Kiri-Same, too. Monteverde Smoke is well-behaved and smooth, but too dark, almost black. In the end I liked Diamine Gray (just plain gray) and an ink I mixed myself from several of my grays.
