I've tried rather unsuccessfully listening to podcasts while writing letters. This usually results in me having to replay parts of the podcast and re-write parts of the letter. Music mostly has the same outcome, however I think something more ambient or classical may work better.
Trying to write letters while watching TV has also been an abject failure. Sometimes to the extent of writing down words or phrases from the TV.

I usually have radio (music) on, but a couple of letters were written to a narration of Go Set a Watchman. There were pauses in letters. I also write letters out and about in cafes, sometimes on a beach, so have the background noise to write through (not a problem).

If it is merely for background noise and I cannot really make anything out I *may* be able to have music or the tv on. Far too often I end up watching whatever is on the tele or upon hearing a good piece of music, researching the artist/performer/piece and down the rabbit hole I go. In order to avoid these distractions I write letters in silence.

I may have music playing in the background and I am usually logged into Facebook, FP Geeks etc if I am at my desk.

I have music in the background often. I've tried writing while watching pen videos. Doesn't work.

My favourite place to write is in the back yard, where the ambient waterfall and bird noise do not distract at all. The neighbour's lawnmower and rain are a bit of a nuisance, though, in which case I go to the front verandah. If I'm indoors with music on, then I tend to alternate attention between music and writing, so it takes a lot longer to write anything. Which is fine unless there's a deadline.

We live in a very small bungalow with very thin walls and my very deaf mother cannot live without her television! Me on the other hand, love silence but it's never gonna happen round here! So to drown out her t.v I have music on whilst I'm writing but only classical, anything else is too distracting.

I write in silence or background music, not usually something I would sing or rock out to. I could not write and have anything else going I had to pay attention to.

I usually write with the deaf neighbour's radio blaring in Australia, and with Radio 4 in the background while in the U.K.

I like to have some background music playing. I choose stuff without words like film scores or classical.
I do find myself sometimes losing focus if a popular movie tune comes on (e.g., Star Wars -- dun, dun, dundun...).

Sometimes I have background music when writing, but I really enjoy listening to the sounds of nature when writing.
One of my favourite places to write is on the river bank, listening to the water flow by, the fish jumping and the birds in the trees.

My hubby Neil works night shift five nights a week so I like to write in the evenings then (or occasionally during the day if the weather is bad and I cannot get out for a walk or up to the allotment to do some gardening). Sometimes I'll do it in silence but more often than not I'll have the computer on and will have a radio programme on in the background - usually one from late evening or morning when I've been at work. I love the catch-up button for tv and radio Just recently I have had youtube videos on in the background - stuff like rain falling, winds howling through trees, thunderstorms, jungle frogs and crickets etc The natural world completely relaxes me.

That sounds a like a cool idea, I may have to look into that I adore the sound of rain falling.

Often with music on, but usually classical. TV or anything talking (radio news, podcasts, etc.) is too distracting.
