It's usually February through April and then again in August through October that work takes over my weekends and depletes my energy. I go in spurts of highs and lows in terms of letters, so if anyone is wondering how come I haven't responded, it's not you, it's me.

Last week I got a Facebook message from someone asking if I got her letter since she hasn't heard from me in a long time. I wrote to her during InCoWriMo in 2018 and got a message from her that she received my letter in early March of that year but I never got the reply she sent to me. If she hadn't contacted me to ask, I wouldn't have known she replied. I was thankful I had logged outgoing and incoming mail so I could do a quick check. I wonder where her letter to me ended up. It was traveling from Germany to North Carolina, USA.

Funnily enough I just got a message via FB from a penpal in Slovakia who I'd posted a letter to a few months ago. It obviously hasn't arrived yet so I said I'd write another to her (which i did today) and that went off today at 5pm when I was walking up to meet Neil when he finished work

I have emptied a box of stuff and made room for correspondence that is no more. Perhaps I should reach out to some of the people. Some penpals I miss more than others. I do know life, and death, gets in the way at times.

I do know life, and death, gets in the way at times. I brought a box of 'meant to open, read and respond' letters that were buried from October 2018 - June 2019, and a box of pens and inks and washi tape, to my new environs. In cleaning the house i'd unearthed a dozen letters of correspondence, some good ones from InCoWriMo 2018, and an old address for a kindred spirit I befriended in LetterMo 2016. i may have found a recent address for her online and I wrote a quick note to her to see if we're still kindred enough to rekindle.

I reached out and received a reply!
Looking at other old letters but I think at least some of the people have moved.

I have been thinking of this lately so the thread is timely. I've always paid attention to answering every letter that's sent my way. However, I noticed that sometimes what was once a monthly exchange starts to stretch out to 2 months before I receive a letter (of course I answer promptly), then 3-4 months, etc.
I wondered if I should send a quick note like a "summer update" or something innocuous but polite. But, then again, the other person may just not feel like corresponding with me so that might seem "pushy or needy" on my part. It's hard to figure these things out.
Why?
Because I've gotten letters "out of the blue" after 1 year where the other person had health problems, moved then resettled, or who knows what. So, you never know.
