According to the USPS website, Square Envelope: add 22¢ Not sure why they are asking for another 49¢ though. Can anyone hazard a guess as to why a square envelope, otherwise within the size requirements, requires extra pottage. Just curious. Non-machinable surcharge (equal to one ounce of postage at the moment). Sorting machines can't make sense of how the letter goes, so it rejects out of the machine and someone has to hand cancel it. Same as if you apply non-machinable surcharge stamps or add an additional ounce of postage and request it; I have done that to a couple of letters in the mail.

In Aus the sender generally receives an invoice in the mail if postage has been underpaid. Forgot to include a stamp for a local letter once, it cost $2 for Admin plus the 60c for the stamp. Haven't received one for an International letter so far, as I always double check postage. But that being said, hopefully if something happened and the recipient was charged, they would let me know so I could send them payment. If I receive a postage due letter, which I have once in little over 2 years now I am not concerned about repayment, whatever it is. I guess it would be a good idea to let the person know but I would really not want them feeling badly about it. I did not tell the person about the one I got. Now if it was a lot & often I would, I guess.

Maybe it requires extra handling in the sorting machines due to the possibility of it going through in the wrong orientation. Yes, this exactly. Yes; the USPS says please don't do this.
