I was going through my old snail mail blog and tinkering with the idea of restarting it when I came across this gem: An Older Way of Writing LettersHas anyone attempted anything similar.

I've seen examples of writing a letter like that, but never in person. Seems like it would be distracting to both read and write.

I was going through my old snail mail blog and tinkering with the idea of restarting it when I came across this gem: An Older Way of Writing LettersHas anyone attempted anything similar. One of my Incowrimo pen pals in Thailand and i exchanged several cross written letters to see what it would be like. Granted it was a little weird, but you'd be surprised; you can read it just fine. Your eye adjusts to focus on what you're reading and the writing going in the other direction fades into the background, albeit a slightly more annoying background than usual.

Another penpal of mine has mentioned crossed letters in her blog.
Edit - her blog is no more, so link removed.

I don't know if it's the inherent regularity of the cursive writing or the muted colours, but the example Mia posted is definitely easy enough to read. It's an interesting idea, but I do think you need very neat handwriting to pull it off.

I've played around with these crosshatched letters.

Using different colors should make it easier to read, I'd think. I've mostly seen this in older letters, where either paper was very scarce or postage was very expensive relative to today.
The only time I've done it myself was when using Noodler's Blue Ghost ink (invisible ink except under UV light). That way there can be an innocuous open letter and the "ghost" letter on the same page, without looking suspicious the way it would if you just mailed some apparently blank sheets.

Frankly speaking, that's not my cup of tea. I like to relax reading a letter, but that would give me a headache.
