My first penpal was through a school penpal address exchange; I was 11 and she was from Germany. My longest penpal and I have written since I was 11-12 (I'm now 33); she is from Italy, and we still write to this day.

the international postage charges were exorbitant. I also remember that - as a teenager back in the 1980s - I spent a fortune of my pocket money for stamps. Overseas letters were SO expensive depending on the weight. At the time I always used that very light - and very ugly! - light blue air mail stationery in order to not exceed 10 g (or roughly 0,35 oz). I loved the air mail envelopes though. Anyone of you still remember that? The long one yes? Light blue with alternating blue and red stripes all around the edges and "AIr mail" (and small plane icon) printed on the corner. Thats how I remember. Wonder if they sell them now. Malaysia had beautiful letter paper with a gorgeous (colourful) stamp already printed on it. My friend wrote on that paper and it could be folded into a sort of ready-made envelope. A basic paper version of a 'transformer' . It was so pretty! <3 I dont know what it's called though..

I guess I was 11 or 12. In some waiting room I read a magazine for children and in there where addresses from other children searching for penpals. I remember scribbling down some, since of course I couldn’t take the magazine

That's an aerogramm, summer87, and my Malaysian penpal used that format, too. I don't think they are available any longer these days, though!

I was about 12 when I put my name in a newspaper in Malaysia in the penpal section and got back 35 letters lol. I kept up the correspondence through my teenage years and loved it. I got a lot of presents in the mail as well, handbags, shoes etc...alas mail was so cheap them, I was living in Fiji at the time
