This is an old but interesting topic. I have a kid. I have 5 dogs. I have a husband. If any of them have an “adventure”, eg son chasing coyotes with a baseball bat to save a stray dog, many of my pen pals will hear about it. If it’s story worthy I share it, otherwise not. Being as “Irish as the day”, I love a good story whether it’s the fabulous trip to the pen store or the baby throwing up on the Pastor. It’s all grist for the letter writer’s mill. Write on I think that almost any topic can be enjoyable to read about when your pen pal is a gifted storyteller.

Wow I am shocked at the first post, you've built up a good raport and then this!
I write to anyone and any gender or skin colour.
I call myself a fruit salad anyway:
Born of Chinese (Asian) descent in Fiji (Islander), moved to Australia, married a white Australian, worked in a New Zealand company. Second marriage to an American. It is very interesting on the phone people try and make out who I am by my accent. Judging from the above I have picked up all those accents and I sound Hawaiian/South African. When I first arrived in Australia I had a very British accent because my teachers (nuns) were from England.
So that global picture can be very confusing lol
I worked at a phone company where I managed 150 men on the field. They always heard me on the phone but never met me. One day they were all summoned to the office and were shocked when they saw me. They had decided amongst themselves that I was a Brunette, tall and Norwegian. hahaha that is my surname they judged me on. I am 5' 1" not tall at all

Though your post is posted for a while now I wanted to reply. I'm so sorry that this has happened to you. I myself don't have children but will write to anyone and don't mind what penpals write about in letters. I think someone can be a good friend no matter whether they are single, married, have kids or not or what age someone is. Different lives are what can make a friendship interesting

I find that such a bizarre story. It would never even cross my mind to not write to someone with whom I was getting on just because they had kids. How weird.
