Perhaps they hope folks will stick new postage on the letters but I just put whatever value they claim I'm short on the envelope with the other cancelled stamps and drop it back into the mail. I took in the first letter it happened on to the clerk at the Checotah PO and that's what he told me to do in the future if it ever happened again. I've done it several times since then without taking it to a clerk and the letter gets through with no problem even with it already having a cancellation mark applied. I was basically told to do the same. In katiel’s case I wonder if the letter was even cancelled. I will cross out barcodes I see with a Sharpie first, as they have a destination address encoded within them and I don’t want the system to kick it back to me that way.

Now that you mention it I think he did black out the barcodes on the letter when he took it from me. I always do it to my postally returned letters although I can't say why for certain but it's likely a habit that developed after seeing a clerk do it on a letter.

ginny , I often have no idea why they rejected the letter. My guess is that whatever the sorting machine rejects gets sent back whether it is a problem with the machine or not. I've given up being irritated by it. I just stick it in another envelope and mail it again. The sticker here says what's the matter and why they reject a letter. I've had it happen several times that they claimed I hadn't put enough postage on a letter when I had it weighed at the post office or put it on my own scale and it was within the limits. After some... interesting... conversations with my postie (who said that it's a 'miracle' what's going on in sorting centres!), I've decided to just pop it into the mail again without adding more stamps - and in about 99,9 % the letter went through then. I have no idea how that all happens.

I don't know if this was a... delay, but I received a postcard today from Japan that was postmarked August 12, if I read the postmark correctly ( 14. X. 21. 8 12 ). That would make for a 10-week delivery time. But...
...I'm so glad it arrived. It's a beautiful postcard, with lovely stamps.

It could well be. I haven't read it yet as I don't read my letters until I'm going to reply to them... i'll have to dig through the 5 questions archive to see what my questions actually were That's an interesting concept, eefa . Aren't you afraid you might miss out on something important, like a penpal telling you they have lost a dear one (parents, spouse, child) and you don't react in appropriate time? That would petrify me. I have unfortunately have had my share of bad news over the year (plus had to share some not so great news myself only recently), and I'd never forgive myself if I didn't send condolences or whatever might be appropriate. That's true I guess ginny and I suppose I hadn't thought of that. And you're correct, I would feel terrible if I missed something like that. I may need to reassess.... at least skim incoming letters before putting them on the reply to pile to make sure that there is nothing time sensitive in there...

Oh nooooooo….. Another Australian letter bounced back today! I mailed a letter to sunshine2170 on October 4th, and it showed up back in my mailbox today with the discontinued service sticker, and the request a postage refund stickers on it. I’ll try taking it to the post office with the other returned card later this week and see what they say. Sorry, Bridget, looks like it’s going to take twice as long as usual to get to you.

How strange....I think someone isnt checking to see that mail is filtering in and just putting it back to sender. We have multiple planes arriving daily bringing Australians back home and especially from the US. None of my mail is being returned so who knows what is going on katiel

Weirdly, 2 of my letters mailed to Aus/NZ on the same days as the ones that were returned arrived just fine. So I have no idea what is really going on. Why did some make it through (on the same day) while others did not? Who knows. I’ll talk to my postal workers at the PO on Thursday.
Also, mine has the same sticker as the one InsomniaQueen posted.
Hopefully, they can just pop these returned letters back in the mail stream, and they’ll reach their destination now. Fingers crossed

Alright, katiel, @patracat, sunshine2170: I got the lowdown on the mail from the US to Australia situation. Any letter over 1 ounce is being categorized as a parcel. Australia is not accepting parcels from the US at this time. So, what I am going to have to do with @patracat's letter is either get rid of the tuck ins or mail them separately.
