That's is a good question. To be honest, I never thought about it before. I may be not deep enough in the penpals world, but it's not something I'd usually require or ask. If anyone from here wants to send me a photo of, I will let him/her do it his/her way :-) I, however, think it is better to wait until the pen friendship goes deeper before sending a picture, because I know, from my public-oriented job, that the first ideas we make about someone tend to stick.

Like Gilly, I'm wondering how I missed this topic until now?! Having a giggle over some of the replies, eg if you were writing to a convict, you'd want a photo in case they escaped! When I started my penpals journey at the age of 10, it was standard procedure to send a photo to each other. Nobody asked, you just did it. I think as kids we all wanted to see each other, and I doubt if the photo made any difference to the friendship we developed. One of my penpals who was four years older than me (I was 15, she was 19) didn't send me a photo of herself for a long time. I don't think I asked her for one; just accepted that she didn't want to for some reason. Eventually she admitted to me that she was disabled by polio and felt embarrassed sending photos of herself to people who hadn't met her. I reassured her that it would make no difference to me, as we were already good mates by then (we were both crazy about Elvis), so she sent me a snap, and over the years, many more. With the advent of the internet, there was all the scare-mongering about evil people stalking you if you gave out your photo/address/phone number etc. so I was very cagey for the first couple of years I was online, but eventually got to know who I could trust, and then it was just another form of friendship. None of my penpals or online friends can look my address up because I always use my post office box number, although I am intrigued by sunshine2170's comment about googling her post office box address, so must try that!

Hi everyone, I'm new here I recently had a similar conversation with one of my pen pals and I wanted to leave a reply. It's not important to me but it might help in certain circumstances. For instance, I sometimes wrote to people who lied about their age (sadly) and they turned out to be way younger than me. I don't want to write to people under 21, or to people in high school (minors). Nowadays most people are on Facebook or Instagram so I always end up "seeing them" I like to have pictures of my pen pals when we've been writing to each other for a long time, but it's not a must with people I've just met.

It is that time of year where cards get sent. Some people make personalised cards depicting their family, and a few penpals have done this...

Our family are never in the same place to be able to take photos for this purpose and when we do, we are so excited to be together we forget about a group photo lol
