I am always self-conscious with plain, blank paper. I can't seem to write straight lines. Sure, I've tried the trick of putting lined paper behind the page. It's hard to see and while it helps a little, not much. But I was thinking: if I got a letter where the lines weren't straight would it bother me? Not at all, quite the opposite: I value the personality!
So I am dropping my enmity with plain paper and if my lines aren't straight then they aren't.
One thing I am finding helps a little is occasionally drawing back from the paper and looking at the whole page, instead of being micro-focused on a word.

I cut out guidelines on card stock, actually, on an Amazon delivery box which is nice and thick. I then trace those onto my page and write. I use a 7 or 9 b pencil as they are easy to erase afterwards. YouTube How to draw your guidelines for Calligraphy Easy and Fast
I use plain paper and card a lot so these helped me. I do however have a light box which is great on certain papers

There's gotta be a template out there somewhere that would print faint grey dots on a piece of paper.

Yeah, I had that too but after my PC crashed and I went for the cut out ones I never bothered. Try this link

When I use plain paper, I often use a line guide underneath. This one works well for me.

I make and print a guide sheet for underneath with heavy enough lines to show through.
I also made an inexpensive writing light box out of a 14x15x2 inch transparent plastic storage box (ArtBin Super Satchel Slim) with mini-fairy lights taped to a piece of white paper in the bottom. I can use it to store paper & envelopes in a folder and writing supplies in a bag inside. If I feel that I need the back lighting, I just pull those out and flick the switch on the 3-AA battery pack which is also taped to the paper backing. I keep a length of blue painter's tape stuck inside to use for little paper-holding strips at the corners of my paper, which also keeps the guide sheet in place.

Wow, now that's dedication... Maybe if I can ever get my handwriting to look presentable, I shall have to put some more effort into getting the lines straight
