I have no self-restraint. I read them immediately if I'm alone - my PO Box is next to a grocery store, I've even gone in to buy coffee and to then sit in my car and read the letter. Otherwise the letter waits until I get home and have a quiet moment, but I always re-read before I respond and sometimes I read it another time in between, just to keep my thoughts on how to respond going.

I always read them when I get home from the post office, because I just can’t restrain myself. Then I like to ponder my response intermittently during the couple/few weeks before I reply, like while I’m going for a walk, standing in the shower, lying awake like a hopeless insomniac. I always read the letter again as I’m actually writing my reply.

I read them immediately if I'm alone. Most people I know don't understand my love for pen palling and they usually make fun of me if they see me with a letter. If I'm not alone, I read them at night, in bed, when there's peace and silence.

You write "leeetterrrss?", with this intonation that means "what the ...??". And then "This is for lonely people", "This is for people who have too much free time", and my favourite: "You're such a geek".

My "favorite" comment in this context: "What do you want with all the dead people?"

I just had a really busy few days. I like to sit down and savor my letters, really enjoy them. In order to do that, I found myself hoarding my unopened letters over several days until I could find a quiet time to to read them. Anyone else do that or do you dive right in when you receive them? If I open letters, and read them, I HAVE to answer then and there. So, I'm really bad about letting them sit until I am able to answer.

I want to respond immediately, but I can't.

I want to respond immediately, but I can't. Even if I know I cannot reply quickly, I still like to read them, because then in my mind, I can work out some of the things I'd like to write (even if I forget), and also keep an eye out for things of interest to include with the reply (e.g. something from a newspaper, a postcard...)

I love to come home and find a letter waiting for me. I make myself a cup of coffee, sit on the carpet in front of the sofa and read it immediately. There's nothing better to wind down after a stressful working day.
As a teenager, when I came home from school, my first question - even before saying 'hello' - was: "Any letters for me today?"
