I recently did this for a traveling journal: vintage, American stamps for all participants. Each received enough stamps to send one letters. The others have done something similar with postcards, hand-made letter-pressed/print items and the like. I think it's neat and relatively inexpensive. For pen-pals, I don't really do this. Aside from stamps and postcards, it's kinda hard to figure out what to send gentlemen. I have stickers, girly postage stamps, washi tape; I don't think they'll know what to do with that stuff. I guess if I ever pick-up an--on-going--gal pen-pal (by chance, it hasn't happened yet), I'll be sending some little extras in the letters. -M I have a couple male pen pals who use washi tape and do semi-envelope art with it. One is really into baseball, so he sends baseball cards in his letters to me. We also each have instant-film cameras and have started collecting typewriters, so we trade pictures any time we add to our collection.

I often will add a calendar page but I think first if the recipient might enjoy it. I have a page a day of obscure English words that I send out in some cases because it reflects my interest in words and their background. I also have a simplicity calendar and one that features books---although most of the books are simple-minded things that were published very recently, so I rarely use that. My favorite thing to add is a poem (often typed up for ease of reading) and a bit of my impressions of it. It's a good way to catch the interest of some people. Others flee, of course! I call them "inserts" instead of "tuck-ins" which conjure up the image of baby diaper wipes to me.
