Well, I have my mug on my profile, and I am not a person who enjoys taking selfies or having photos taken. The reason is, if there is anything remotely good that I took away from Facebook (and there ain’t much), it’s that bedrock of using your real name. Standing behind who you are. I like that. It’s one of the reasons I supported having bios here, so we can share what we like to about ourselves. One of the things I put into that database I wrote recently for tracking correspondence was including where I “met” someone and what their username is, because I find it confusing. Here, for example, I’m writing to several of you yet I have difficulty connecting that person from the letters with whatever username/avatar you have here. My database includes copies of previous letters and a small field for a few notes, so that I can refer to them when writing if necessary. Generally once I’ve exchanged more than a couple of letters with people, it’s not as necessary to refer to them as the person starts to become more three dimensional in my mind. I don’t ever send pictures of myself, but I don’t think I’d be offended if someone asked, unless they asked for a specific pose. Lol

I only have a couple of penfriends, and yes I did "vet" them. We chatted via email for a while before we moved to snail mail. I like to get to know someone and be sure we're likely to be friends before handing my home address out. There were a few, probably six or seven which fizzled out before it got to the address swapping stage, and probably the same again that never got pest the first couple of emails. Nothing sinister, there just wasn't that click. If I think one of us will get bored with the other after the first couple of letters, I won't bother at all.

I think it is sort of fun to create a mental image of a person from their letters. You may be all wet in terms of what the person really looks like. Eventually there are clues regarding the pen friends age...kids, grandkids, etc. One of my pen friends mentioned the age of her father...he was one year younger than me...would she want to be pen friends with a guy a year older than her father?! I don't know. I really don't care how old someone I write to is, as long as I enjoy their letters. Perhaps a personal photo would destroy that mental image. I don't know whether that would be good or bad. If our correspondence would lead me to believe they might enjoy knowing what the person they are corresponding with looks like, I might send a photo. But usually I don't.

Sometimes I have thought I should make penpal cards and fill in at least with the birthday because I usually forget to send wishes, even if it's my long-time penfriends. However, so far I haven't done it. I never asked for photographs and no one has even asked me but some penfriends have sent me theirs.

Category Weird: I stalk a couple of my longtime pen pals’ weather. I have a weather app on my phone and a page for each of their cities’ daily weather conditions. I hope this is harmless and that I’m not going tilted...

When it goes from general to specific, or very specific, that's a tilted...

I've had an online presence in some form or another since college, and I've had an online journal or blog in some form or another for roughly just as long. And like Schnacks, my face is there on my profile picture (along with Tommy Stinson, formerly of Guns N'Roses and The Replacements). But I am guarded with what I post online about my son, as well as my husband (neither has a social media presence, and at least with my son, he's not yet old enough for it). Myself, though? My life is kind of an open book, so it's not too difficult to find information about me. I don't go seeking out too much on penpals, though I follow a lot of ya forum members on Instagram.

Except for when hurricanes spawn tornadoes. But I’ll have him keep an eye out.

I thought several times about making an Excel file to see who answered and who I have to send letters too, but it's not worth it. I'll have plenty of time when I'll be very old and bored, to read my letters.
