I thought some of you might be interested in some of the letters that my grandma saved, and which I am now trying to archive/save/do something with... This one is from her mother to her, written 12/12/1941. My grandma was 20, in her second year of college at UC Berkeley studying dental hygiene. It was written 5 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. December 12, 1941 Letter

Thanks for sharing, oregonclaire! What a treasure and an interesting glimpse into the mindset of Americans at that time, especially in regards to men enlisting.

Thanks for sharing, oregonclaire ! What a treasure and an interesting glimpse into the mindset of Americans at that time, especially in regards to men enlisting. I thought that was interesting too. My great-grandmother would have been 21 in 1917 when the United States entered the First World War, which obviously would have shaped her thoughts on the matter. I haven't found a lot in subsequent letters about her thoughts and feelings, mostly because she lived in San Francisco and my grandmother was at UC Berkeley just across the Bay, so the letters were essentially what I use text messages to my mom for now - very quotidian. I have found four letters written to my grandmother from a BOY, when she was about 15 or 16. They are a hoot (he was very artistic, amazing handwriting and doodles!) so I'll have to scan them. Sadly, he signed with a nickname and the return address was the YMCA in San Francisco, so I don't know who he was (not my grandfather, lol).

oregonclaire, what a wonderful treasure to have found. Especially at such a momentous time of the 20th century. Good luck with the archiving.

Those are some cool letters! Also interesting to note that there might have been multiple collections and/or deliveries in that area in the 1940s.
For reference, what’s the size of the paper? I had an interesting conversation on Instagram regarding how long letters used to be in an era where mail was the inexpensive option (e.g. telephone pricing was crazy and getting cross-country was worse). I have a feeling that people wrote shorter letters prior to the ubiquity of telephones and email.
