I received a small package from a pen pal in the UK. It contained a small notebook in which a long 'letter' had been written. Nice! It cost my pen pal £3.80 to send it to me, which is $5.01 (at the time I'm posting this). And so, I was thinking about writing back in much the same way. And, using the USPS "Calculate International Prices" tool, I found that, were I to mail an identical small package back to my UK pen pal, it would cost $14.50 (£10.99). I'm probably going to do it, but....

I know what you mean! I was going to send a coloring book to a pen pal in Poland for his son, until I saw the price for postage.

Sigh. We have the same problem. The cost of sending parcels from Australia to anywhere is ugly. Pity! In Australia, even the postage can kill you.

Postage in Ireland seems so expensive as well. For letters we have 2 rates - National for in Ireland and anywhere else in the world so in effect it costs me the same to send a letter to the UK (€1.70) as it does to Australia! The International rate was actually due to increase (again) last Spring but An Post postponed that increase when COVID hit. I feel that I must keep An Post in business with all the stamps that I buy

I feel that I must keep An Post in business with all the stamps that I buy I’m surprised the EU countries didn’t mandate a EU-level postage rate for its members. I know most EU members (plus the UK) have a Europe band for international, but the Netherlands doesn’t. I can’t remember if the Swiss have a Europe rate but that’s easy to check.... The US letter rates are actually really good, but that can happen when you handle 45+% of the world’s first-class mail daily. Domestic shipping is generally pretty reasonable, especially compared to FedEx and UPS. It’s the international parcel rates that are insidious.
