I am curious what is the most unusual paper/stationery that you have received a letter on. I had a French pen friend that used to send me letters on the back of kids games she had copied for her children but didn't use. She also sent me letters on the back of fliers for a marathon, she was a marathon runner. Then there were placemats from a restaurant, interesting to see what the offerings were. I really enjoyed the letters because they gave me a feeling of what life for that French family was like. I think I've also received letters written on the blank back of maps.

I have one penpal who's a high school teacher and he's been sending my letters on old classroom handouts from 10 or so years ago. I have another penpal who sent a letter using a tiny/thin notebook she had. It was rather fun, reading her letter like a little book.

A letter on the back of maps is great! In my teens I once wrote a letter on paper napkins and the recipient wrote back on tissues π In more recent years I don't remember any excessively original or eccentric sheet; the weirdest was a letter on an L-shaped sheet, that is, an A4 sheet from which one quarter had been cut out! I wondered if the sender was really anti-waste but it was a one time swap and I never discovered. Oh and a penpal once wrote her letter on a plain sheet that, prior to writing, had been folded both diagonally and parallely to the sides and then smoothed out. I wonder if I should consider the folds a sort of decoration since the sender studies art π

Santoro (who make Gorjuss), have produced some interesting letter writing sets. One was shirt origami, and also came with a sheet of stickers - buttons & ties.
Occasionally with walking, we print out the OS map for the walk on one side of paper. The other side, I have used for letters.

When we stay in a hotel, I swipe the stationery if they have it, even if itβs just a notepad. I miss the days when hotels always had stationery in the rooms. I usually send the hotel stationery to one pen pal in particular. We have a habit of using paper that is decidedly fountain-pen-unfriendly. I feel kind of bad sending bad stationery to someone who uses good paper.

Well, this is an interesting topic! I suppose I've received some letters from folks on here on "odd" or unique stationery, but have never sent any myself. I usually use my letter writing as a cover for my stationery buying habit. I've bought less of the expensive kind these days (like Crane) because they simply don't make the lined kind anymore. Now I'm intrigued to try some more non-conventional methods!

I received a small moleskin notebook recently. Prior to that, the most interesting was some colored vellum paper.

I receive letters on historic stationery from one pen pal. Everything from old motel/hotel stationery to train companies and the last featured a Ken-L Ration dog food letterhead. Another pen pal sends letters on the back of old design sketches from 20+ years ago. I guess the absolute strangest thing I've ever sent a letter on was some single ply toilet paper. Unused of course. I haven't heard back from that particular pen pal so I may have gone a bit too far in my attempt at humor. Mostly I send odd sized letters attached to postcards or other stiffening devices.

I received one of those origami shirts from Mia and probably should have mentioned it in my list but wasn't thinking about odd shaped letters so much. Usually anything odd shaped I end up trying to reproduce when I get too bored.

Er. Definitely lacking in the stellar letter materials department. Some vintage onion skin paper has come my way, but nothing so exotic as mentioned here.
I suppose I should get to shopping!

That and all the other paper ephemera that comes tumbling out of the envelope. It's a small world apparently His letters have also led me to buying unique return labels and a 1st Class rubber stamp since we've corresponded.
