Can anyone recommend some fountain pen friendly stationery that is more suited for a guy? A lot of what I see is cute, but it doesn't quite seem to fit my style. I'm looking for something that doesn't have kittens, bunnies, butterflies, hearts, etc. I picked up some simple L!fe writing paper, but my italic nibs don't seem to handle it well.

Mia (the admin here) recently sent me a letter on lined notepad stationery which had the faded parts of an old map around the edges. One of the shops in Sydney had some Italian stationery with 'Renaissance' style headers which looked impressive but costly.
The old manly standby would be to use (or make up) your family coat of arms and motto and have that printed or photocopied on good quality paper.

I made myself a Word template with very feint ruled lines and an image in the header which usually has one of my vintage aircraft drawings in it. I print the template on blank A4 Tomoe River paper that I use for most of my letters. Bogon above prints an image of the pen he used to write the page, at the top of the page which is a very novel approach.

The map paper is from Paperchase. I also have dotty paper from them. Apparently they do deliver to the US and some other countries (but no idea how much the p&p would be). Other than plain/lined paper, manly patterned seems rare here. I have absolutely tons of Diddl (I also received one note on Diddl paper from a bloke in his late 50s accompanied by postcards) and other cute stuff. One letter from a penfriend in Asia was headed with.. I'm not sure what that is about. "Space Bonjour Will experience in a mysterious universe mustache" - perhaps something lost in translation. Any ideas?! Perhaps you could print some manly things in corners of printer paper. I do know people who print out designs and lines to write their letters on.

Good question! 'Manly' things for me would include things like: - Simple line/box border in blue, gold, etc. Something other than pink. I have some like this from Peter Pauper paper, and it is working fairly well for me, although it is a bit pricey.
- If you incorporate images, perhaps something with mountains, trees, eagles, shields, lighthouse, a fountain pen, etc.
- Interesting quotes by men and/or women and incorporate them under a line at the bottom of the page.
- Monogram paper where a customer can give you their initials and your emboss or print that on the page somehow (e.g., corner, top, bottom, etc.)

I really like your offerings in your Etsy shop saskiamadding. Also thanks for the link for Paperchase, Mia.

Have you been to Paper Place on Lamar near Central Market? Besides having a few fountain pens, they have lots and lots of stationery stuff. There is definitely plenty of pretty and cute there, but you might find something to your liking. Also, they have a lot of Rhodia and Clairefontaine which should probably handle your italic nib.

Yes, I'm in Austin almost to Round Rock. Thanks for the lead on Paper Place. I'll check them out!

That is a bit of a trek for me just for the possibility of decent paper

I made it down to Paper Place over lunch today, and I picked up several things. Thanks for the tip gbryal! The staff was friendly, and one sales clerk had some experience with fountain and dip pens. I chatted with her a bit, and she pointed out several 'manly' stationery items. Websitewww.paperplaceaustin.com/Stationery- Crane & Co - Huge selection of note cards, letter sheets, envelopes, and boxed sets
- Original Crown Mill - letter sheets and envelopes
- Vellum of Crown Mill - looks like same company with a different line of paper
- William Arthur - limited set of letter sheets
- Monarch - limited set of letter sheets
- G. Lalo - small selection of boxed card and envelope sets
NotebooksHuge selection of guided/themed options (e.g., lists, diary like things, etc.). Smaller selection of free-form options including: - Shinola Detroit - Never heard of them, but made in USA. I picked up two small notebooks in a pack for $6.75. No bleeding or feathering, so I was happy. They have larger notebook options too.
- Rhodia - small selection of various sizes, most where lined.
- ClaireFontaine - smaller selection, most were spiral bound
- Field Notes - small selection
- Moleskin - huge selection, but most folks don't find these fountian pen friendly
PensThey had a small display with a bunch of ballpoint pens and a few fountain pens -- Lamy, Pilot, and Monteverde. They offered to let me look at any of them, but I passed as I'm happy with what I have, and wasn't interested in their selection.
