Bare fingers. But an iconic memory of my Dad was his habit of opening all of his correspondence with a 10 inch morgue blade which he stropped to a razor edge once a week.

I have found fingers to be very ineffective, especially with some of the beautiful hand made envelopes. Some are like a vault to get open. Also I hate to ruin their looks. Morgue blade? LOLOLOL Really??? LOLOLOLOL

I use my fingers for bills and "official" letters because the envelopes are thrown away anyway.
For letters from friends I ususally use a small knife from the kitchen. I also hate to ruin the envelopes. If none of the small knives is clean, I'd occasionally also resort to one of the 10 inch knives. ;-)

At home I swap between a lovely brass knife with hardwood handle bought from a chandler, and a pewter blade with an intricate Celtic cross engraved in the handle (which I think I bought at Castell Caerffili many years ago). At work I use a pewter blade that has a magnificent dragon wrapped around the handle. None are sharp enough to do a post-mortem , but are all are sharp enough that Miss Marple might consider me a suspect if the professor gets offed in the dining room. Having very nice letter openers adds to the pleasure of receiving letters.

Right now my weapon of choice is a Gerber paraframe knife, but when I can find it I use Andúril, the Flame of the West, that came with a copy of one of the LOTR movies. I like the little widgety letter openers they sell at Office Depot when they are new, but they get dull fast and I go back to a knife.

I have a few letter openers but none are sharp enough for long. So I use a kitchen paring knife. Not so fancy, but it works.

AT the present time, I use a scissors to cut open business mail, but an old steel letter-opener I was assigned in 1966 to open my mail at Bell Telephone is still with me and still works.
