If I write a letter in the morning I usually have a cup of coffee nearby, if in the evening it's a cup of tea. Do you usually have a beverage when you are writing? What is your preference coffee, tea, wine, beer, or something else. Does it make a difference what time of day?
Is it the same when you sit down to read a letter(s)?
If you are a tea person do you prefer black, green, flavored, or herbal tea?

I start with a grape flavored Rockstar, then a Venom Mojave Rattler (grape again) then will either have a diet A&W Root Beer or grape-raspberry Sparkling Ice. I write through most of those. If I'm still writing come 6 PM then I might have a beer or three. Mostly those happen after my writing is done and the Winter Olympics are on.

Coffee. Black. Unless I’m having pancakes. Then it’s whiskey.

Usually it's just water, though sometimes in the evenings I'll make a cup of cocoa. I cut my caffeine consumption off around noon, otherwise I can't sleep.

Depends on what office I’m in. The home office? Usually what I have already poured: tea is the standard. Moka pot coffee, water, sometimes wine will make an appearance. The “morning office” is usually a coffee bar. The “afternoon office” is usually a wine bar. The “other office” is either an airport bar or in the skies. Typically it’s coffee, ginger ale, or water. I usually don’t drink alcohol at 34000 feet unless I’m in business class or premium economy. If it’s on the ground it’s alcohol. The “other, other office” is on the high iron (rails), so coffee or water. https://www.instagram.com/p/CYezFVgPgm2

Nice question. I actually do this: I have a cup of water first thing, then tea (lose leaf). Then I re-use those leaves for another cup at some point, and at the end of the day, I use those old cold leaves one more time after the caffein is all rinsed away. Black, Green, Indian/British, Japanese, Chinese, Herbal. I have one or two nice examples of each. This morning, just a very nice quality Ceylon, simple as that, from my trusted store in Sedona, Trail Head Tea. My husband is coffee only and always, and also, like vertolive, black. What sort of tea do you like?

I wish I could drink coffee all day long. I really love coffee. Can't function without the first cup in the morning! Though, for letter writing I think a nice cup of tea is best. Sometimes when I make tea to drink while I'm doing something I become so focused on whatever I'm doing that I forget my tea and it gets cold... Does that happen to anyone else?

Yes, if I'm focused on a letter I'm writing my tea sometimes gets cold before I am done.
On a cold snowy day (supposed to get 6-8 inches today) I like a cup of Lapsang Soughing, makes me think of campfires or smoke tanned moose hide. I also like Irish Breakfast, for its rich flavor. Earl Gray goes down nice. Minnesota N'ice is a good flavored tea. I found that I was always steeping my green teas too long, 3 minutes or less and it's not bitter but nice and smooth.
I buy most of my bulk tea from our local food co-op and their tea seems to come from The Tea Source. Do you buy your tea locally or order it online? Do you usually drink the same tea or are you adventurous and try lots of different kinds?
Do you drink your tea straight or add milk and honey or sugar?

I've found old cold cups of tea sitting somewhere hours later. I need to try a Lapsang. I have a very nice Earl Gray mixed by the tea store themselves. Unpopular opinion (as they say) but I don't like Irish Breakfast or Lady Grey. As for steeping, I've been watching some Japanese tea videos and we really shouldn't be steeping some of that stuff for very long at all. It gets poured out almost immediately using those Yixing tea pots. And yes, honey, sugar, agave syrup, almond milk - anything I want without guilt, but then some tea, like green jade, sometimes, just plain. If a restaurant has crappy tea, I just get hot water and a lemon and am pretty happy with that. penguy, are you thinking of trying new teas or coffees?

I am always trying new teas, trying to find that perfect tea. My wife thinks I have too many bags of tea already, she is a coffee person. Guess it is like trying to find that perfect ink color or perfect pen!
I am looking for a tea that is rich, mellow, and not bitter. Any suggestions?

I like coffee if I'm writing in the morning. Otherwise I usually don't drink anything. I read many of my letters standing up, having just grabbed a kitchen knife to slice them open and not wanting to go anywhere else before starting to read.

To reply to the what's a mellow tea question, I'd say the classics are mellow, as already mentioned. Find a plain old Ceylon. That's my tried and true black so far.

Second the recommendation for Ceylon/Sri Lankan (generally). Indian and Kenyans are going to be a bit harsher. Avoid Russian Caravan/Lapsang Souchong at all costs. For Ceylon - if you have a Whole Paycheck nearby, the Allegro Ceylon's pretty good. Dilmah isn't a bad brand online either, just avoid their red-label and generic bags.

Water! There may be a mug of green tea as well but there's always a glass of water.
