I noticed a lot of us commenting on our reply piles lately, and I thought it might be nice to have a place to celebrate our successes of catching up, or lament our falling behind, or just a place to do some writing accountability. I’ll start. 🙂 I had a glorious summer of happy mail! I heard from nearly all my penpals (even the ones that I only hear from once every 2 or 3 years - all of them!). I loved every letter, but with all the traveling and summer activities, I barely had time to write. So by the end of September I had an overflowing reply pile of 27-ish letters to respond to (I’d taken so long to reply, that several penpals had written to me TWICE). Now that life is more back to normal, I’ve been writing up a storm lately. I’m very proud to report that as of today, my reply pile is down to 18! (including a couple new ones that arrived this week!) YAY! My goal is to catch up, by sending replies in Christmas cards. Can I do it? We’ll see! I’d probably stand a better chance at success, if I wrote shorter letters, but apparently I’m a jabberbox. Haha! Either way, I’m having a great time getting back into writing after a few months of barely replying to letters at all. I’ve missed these “slow conversations!” So how does your reply pile look right now? You are so correct ... we should be more positive. I know currently in the UK we are dealing with postal strikes but despite that I am doing ones best to catch up. I just love receiving Taking each day and letter as it comes and doing what I can <3 Btw katiel Love the thread/post

Thanks for explaining, Steph Walford - as I said, for someone who's not a native speaker, notions like that can be confusing. It's been a long time since I learnt English at school, and obviously, I learnt British English as it was spoken in the 70s and 80s... of course, languages evolve, plus there's American English, British English, Caribbean English, Australian English and what-not, so it can become a bit much for someone like me Yes, I have same issue with my German. Learnt it at school and sadly with lack of usage a lot of it has been lost. Using Duolingo and some friends to try improve it again

10-15 it varies ... I try my best to keep tabs but sometimes it just goes a bit AWOL What on earth does AWOL stand for? As a non-native speaker, I'm sometimes puzzled by that kind of abbreviations / acronyms. 'Absent without leave' (which is what I found when I googled the expression) somehow doesn't seem to fit the context?
So sorry to confuse. It used in reference to me keeping note of where I am in my writing list and sometimes my replies mount up

I get asked why a lot ... They say why do I not email or DM etc? Simple answer is I enjoy receiving post that is not BILLS or JUNK! Writing letters in this "era" is a dying art and I hate to see it go completely! Ok I not the most fastest at responding but that is beside the point there LOL

I was super happy to receive a copy of the Paper Lover's Flow magazine from my friend in Belgium. Also received 2 new bottles of ink... J. Herbin Stormy Grey and Diamine Oxrblood. As I live in Ohio it seems fitting enough that I should get scarlet and grey ink. Would love to hear about everyone else's paper, pens, washi tapes, stickers and ink. I am awaiting a fountain pen from Amazon! ... Taking forever... Treated self to some smiley face stickers and writing paper 😄

I will often start a letter when I am having a nice cuppa in a cafe during the day. I want to show that letter writing is still alive. Someone came up to me when I was writing one letter in a pub, to ask if I was a teacher. When I am at home, I like to write in the evenings, not so much in the daytime, although I have written out in the garden (front, or even in the greenhouse in the back). Finding it so sad how the art of letter writing is dying rapidly!

Oddly enough, though, I sometimes like writing when I have a feverish cold, since I rather hope my gibberish will skew the direction of e. e. cummings, or "The (disassociative) Love Song of J. Alfred Proofrock," and I'll find myself in the canon (or maybe cannon?) of English literature: "There will be . . . time for all the works and days of hands That lift and drop a question on your plate; Time for you and time for me, And time yet for a hundred indecisions, And for a hundred visions and revisions, Before the taking of a toast and tea. In the room the women come and go Talking of Michelangelo." -- T. S. Eliot Rather inspiring Thankyou xx

When do you guys tend to write? Do you have a specific time of day? I will advise NEVER to write when tired or not 100% with it as have realised that this poor pen-pal is going to receive a letter of gibberish if not careful. Stephanie put the pen down!!
