So far I'm even with the same number of each gender, but that's only because 2 of male correspondence stopped writing to me because I don't like sport! To quote Peter from Ohio "What kind of man are you? How can you not like sports? Please DO NOT write me again" Good job I didn't mention I like baking! I've also had a few marriage proposals from ladies, mainly from Russia. My only stipulation as mentioned in another thread is that they are over 18. Apart from that I don't care if your male, female, or somewhere in between as long as you refrain from using bad language I'll write to anyone. I don't care for sports or follow them either. I can't imagine how frightening it must be for someone whose very manhood depends on 24/7 access to ESPN.

I've had a few comments in my time some even from family regarding my "manliness". Well I'm sorry but if letter writing, collecting pens and other related ephemera makes me less of a man then so be it. I am not wasting what little free time I have watching overpaid numpties chase a ball round a field, drooling over cars I can't afford and ogling every woman that crosses my path. If that's what being a real man is then buy me a dress and call me suzy!

I don't write to people with whom I share no common language and I don't write to people with whom I have nothing in common. Apart from that I'll write to anybody irrespective of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, skin colour, age etc etc. I actually even write to some Australians

As an aside, did anyone write love-letters to their girl/boy-friends and then partners/spouses? (perhaps that should be a topic for a thread of its own) Yes. I met my wife whilst living in London and she lived in Leicester. Almost our sole means of communication for four years or so was by letter. I used to work a lot of night shifts and I spent many an hour writing to her on those night shifts. Nowadays i rarely write to her, other than quick notes that i stick on the fridge, but I still tend to write letters late at night when its dark outside and the house is quiet

Ummmm....is it OK if I watch some of the rugby world cup, if I promise to hold a fountain pen or two, and maybe make some envelopes whilst I watch? I don't think the Welsh side are ALL numpties.

You can watch whatever you like my friend and you don't even have to hold a pen whilst doing it, I have no objection to people doing what they enjoy (within reason) as long they offer me the same respect and don't consider me a lesser human being for enjoying something different to them. Variety is the spice and all that.

Personally I don't care what gender I'm writing with. I'll take men, women, other. I think I've had the good luck to have a balance between both men and women - it leans slightly in favor in women. I think it does make a difference in what I write; there are some things that I'd be more comfortable talking with to a woman and other things with a man... but not much difference. My wife doesn't seem to mind my writing to all these strange women.

All my relatives are into American Football, but for me an utter waste of time. Sometimes I think I should follow it just to fit in, but it wouldn't be me. I do drool over the latest pen, its taken every ounce of the little willpower left not to empty my bank account.

Yes i collect pens and I like cooking too,I've even been known to dabble in a spot of gardening not just the rough tough landscaping kind with big machines and manly tools but flowers and stuff too! I feel your pain with the willpower thing buddy, I've even been considering therapy to help with my "problem" The Pen shop in Manchester even threatened to take out a restraining order on me!

I like pens and American football - not sure what that says about me. I am currently trying to restrain myself on further pen purchases. I even sold a few recently.

I answered "Yes, I only write to the same gender."
First of all, let me specify that I am referring only to my current situation and I do not speak in general terms. There are multiple reasons for my writing to females only. One is that I long for friendship with other women, because I work in a mostly male environment and because at the moment I have no time for friendship "in real life" (as if writing were not real life :-) ). With some we share the daily experiences of married life and motherhood, with some we do not, and that is fine, I like hearing other female points of view on various things, events and ideas. This attitude of mine depends on the assumption that in general men and women are different, something I firmly believe in, but other may see it differently. Another reason is that my husband is indeed my best friend, and his friendship suffices, as a male friendship. I am also in with kansaskyle, I do not want to develop friendships with guys, which can become too close and intimate. I had male penpals in my teens and in my twenties, but really, now it would make me a bit uncomfortable, even if, I have to say, there are great men here and some of the questions they asked in the "5 question challenge" are very interesting indeed.

Really? Somebody stopped writting you because you don't like sports? ... That is unexpected. I mean I am not into the sports thing too so we should make a club. LOL. I also like baking, esp. Bread. Good luck with your future penpals So far I'm even with the same number of each gender, but that's only because 2 of male correspondence stopped writing to me because I don't like sport! I think that people who are going to develop feelings beyond friendly for pen pals are in danger of doing it with anyone they have interactions with - FB friends, work colleagues. I don't think there is something special about pen pals that makes them more scary in terms of intimacy. Personally, if I had a partner that worried about that, I'd wonder what s/he thought about me talking to other people in person, or IM chatting, or even going to classes and seeing the people each week. If all it takes is exposure and conversation, then we're really in trouble for a lot of reasons.
