I'm in a "poll-mood"... At which age did you start penpalling? If you'd like to tell us about your first penpal, that would be great.

My best friend, Marilyn, moved away when we were 15 years old. Back then there were no long distance phone plans so the only way to keep in touch regularly was by letter. We both promised to always write and 56 years later ( that's not a typo ) we still exchange letters and cards. We visit, email and phone each other but letters remain a very special part of our friendship.

I think I was thirteen or fourteen. My French teacher handed round forms from the International Youth Service for getting penpals. I had one from France, one from Singapore and one from Germany. I still have those letters but the correspondence did not last long.

I was 11. I have the same aunt & uncle as a girl my age but on opposite sides. Her mom is the aunt's sister and my dad is the uncle's brother. We were introduced by our uncle when we were 4 and saw each other a few times every year when she visited for a weekend or, best of all, 2 glorious weeks in the summer. When I went away to college, we stopped writing frequently. Eventually we switched to regular emails and the rare letter in the mail. Now, we mostly keep up with each other on Facebook but I do send her a handwritten letter from time to time.

I started at the age of 10. I looked for penpals in a magazine for little girls.

My French teacher handed round forms from the International Youth Service for getting penpals. I wonder if that's where my teacher got addresses from too? I vaguely remember in Middle School (so aged 9 - 13) the teacher giving us all an individual address to write to. I remember writing a letter and am sure I must have got one back but cannot remember anything about it My first proper penpal was a girl I found in Pony Magazine and she lived in Tiverton, Devon. She had a Dartmoor pony called Dart and an Arab gelding called Tambo. We write a couple of times but letters petered out as we grew up It wasn't until my 20's that I started writing to one of my current penpals, Melanie, in 1991 and we still write.....mostly about wildlife

I moved a lot when I was growing up, and always tried to keep in touch with the friends I left behind. Long distance phone calls were not cheap in the 80's! I managed to keep in touch with my best friend from 5th grade and my best friend from 8th grade, first through long, drama-filled, teen-angst letters about the boys I was sure to marry. Then, because I had kept in touch with them well-enough, once we were in college and email came along, we kept in touch more regularly. Both of them were in my wedding. Now, I know so much about their current lives thanks to facebook. My first "real" pen pal was in 7th grade. I signed up for a pen pal exchange at my local library and exchanged a few letter with a penpal from Japan. Her name was Misa Mochizuki. She was a good pen pal; I was not. My family moved a year later and we lost touch.

I started pen palling only a few years ago, trying to put my fountain pens to better use. It became an important part of me and my life since.
