I am wondering if anyone has fun ideas about things that you can enclose in a letter or something a little different to add a bit of spice to correspondence.
I have a pen friend in Australia and he and I have been corresponding for perhaps four years. We are always talking about places we visit, things we see, landscapes we see etc. So I've done a couple things to add to the letters I send. I've sent a state highway road map. Both of us love maps and he can find places I've visited, places with strange place names, geological features, etc. I also sent him a tourists map of Lake Superior and the North Shore. It gives us more things to talk about and share.
In my last letter I told him I had used google maps and found his home. Then I invited him to google mine and then suggested he take the little man and put him on the street in front of my house and I gave him driving direction to get to the Arts Center I am always talking about. He followed my directions and saw the city park, court house, and found the Arts Center and the coffee shop I go to. He sort of remotely drove around town and found it really fun and interesting. He also told me about the things that have been done to his house since the google photo had been taken and tried to figure out when it had been taken. He was also interested in what kind of tree was in my front yard. It is amazing what you can do!
What have you done to add a little something extra to your correspondence???

I often put in leaflets about the various places I've visited so my pals can get a visual idea of what the place is like. Neil says I'm SO embarrassing as I stuff half a dozen or so leaflets into my bag (rather than just one like normal visitors!) but I just tell him they're to pass on to my friends I never thought about putting in a map......that would be quite good for when I'm chatting to my fellow wildlife/birdwatching enthusiasts so they could 'see' the various habitats I have around here in Northumberland

I like the idea of putting in a map for wildlife/birdwatching enthusiasts. I'm afraid I also take more than one leaflet and for the same reason. My wife is used to such things as a matter of fact if she sees something she thinks might be good she will pick some extras for me. Perhaps you need to ask your husband to be a co-conspirator.

I also Google Earth my pen friends addresses, rather interesting!
I some times make the envelope out of maps or magazine pictures/articles but I have not yet put a map in with the letter, sounds like fun!
One of my German pen friends likes to doodle and her letters are often full of doodles around the pages.

I have gathered some leaflets about my town and surroundings, planning to send them whenever suitable. Most of my penfriendships are rather new so I'll get to know them first to make sure it's appreciated. This summer I did add some postcards from our trips. For christmas one of my penfriends got some Swedish straw ornaments which were easy to send as they are quite light. I haven't gotten a response yet, but I hope they were liked

I once received a feather from the USA (I can't remember which bird now sadly - I'll have to find out the letter) which was really exciting as a nature lover.

I add things that are... flat:
postcards from my town and/or state for the birdwatchers, a list of the 50 or so birds I've seen locally brochures from museums and historic sites that I've visited small watercolor paintings or color-pencil sketches stationery samples for the stamp collectors, used stamps photographs stickers ATCs (made by my wife) and I sometimes add an illuminated initial letter to the first page

When I was younger, I remember swapping coins and stickers with international penpals. I've included postcards and washi before, and for one of my penpals who has children, I love including some stickers and coloring pages for them. The majority of my letters have a few photographs included...I am always taking pictures and enjoy sharing ones from my recent hikes (I love hunting for waterfalls) or some of my animals, etc.

I sometimes put a little tea bag or two in my letters. Here the post carriers take often the coins they find, and I've ever been robbed some chocolate, so I don't put so much of them.

I'll often add a sticker that you could only get locally, like a local brewery if it's know nationally (or internationally). Postcards are nice, too.

I have sent: Baby olives dropped by my tree, feathers, ink samples, polaroids, calling cards, postcards, unused stamps, fabric swatches, a knitted mouse, Chinese Fortune Fish, bookmarks, word of the moment, and seeds, to name a few.
Received: Tourist brochures, holy cards, music cds, crocheted objects d’art, news clippings, and part of a Pop Tart.

I could search the forum, but didn't someone say something about receiving a burger in the post, and a can of fizzy drink?
